Chapter 5 - The Glass Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black ties, expensive gowns, and armed syndicate lieutenants.
Seven long tables formed a semi-circle around a central podium, where the bosses of Chicago’s seven ruling crime families sat. At the center stood Victor Hartwell, looking immaculate in a tailored tux, though a tense sweat glistened on his forehead.
"Adrian Mercer has lost his mind!" Victor announced loudly to the council, his voice echoing across the gilded ceiling. "He rejected a multi-million-dollar merger with my family for a common servant! When I sent men to reason with him, he executed them in cold blood! He is unfit to lead the northern territory!"
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the older bosses.
"Is that so, Victor?" a powerful voice echoed from the main entrance.
The heavy oak doors swung open.
Adrian Mercer walked into the ballroom. He was dressed in a pristine black tux, looking every bit the dangerous, aristocratic prince of Chicago. But it wasn't Adrian who made every jaw in the room drop.
Walking beside him, her arm resting gracefully on his bowed elbow, was Hannah Brooks.
She wore a custom emerald-green silk gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking elegance. Her hair fell in soft, luscious waves around her shoulders, and around her neck hung the multi-million-dollar diamond necklace that had once belonged to Adrian’s mother. She walked with her head held high, radiating pure, unshakeable confidence.
Beside them walked Arthur Mercer, carrying a silver briefcase.
Victor Hartwell’s face went completely pale. "What is the meaning of this?!"
Adrian stopped in the center of the ballroom floor, looking up at the seven bosses.
"Victor claims he sent men to 'reason' with me," Adrian said calmly, pulling a sleek black remote control from his pocket. He aimed it at the giant projector screen hanging behind the podium. "Let's see his idea of reasoning."
With a click, the high-definition security footage from Old Mill Road lit up the screen.
The entire council watched in horrific silence as Victor’s three tactical operatives ambushed Hannah’s small blue sedan, crashing into her car and attempting to drag her out into the woods. The audio recorded from the car's dashcam played loudly over the speakers:
“Victor Hartwell said if the maid dies tonight, Adrian will have no choice but to marry Vanessa!”
A collective gasp of disgust rippled through the room. In the mafia code, targeting an innocent woman—especially a member of a rival's household—was a treasonous violation punishable by death.
"You lied to the council, Victor," Arthur Mercer declared, stepping forward and tossing his silver briefcase onto the central table. It popped open, revealing bank statements showing Victor’s illegal offshore transfers to rival gangs in Detroit. "You tried to murder my daughter-in-law to force a hostile takeover of our territory."
Victor backed away toward his guards, panic clear in his eyes. "This is a setup! Shoot them!"
None of his guards moved. They looked at the footage on the screen, then at the angry faces of the six other bosses, and slowly lowered their weapons.
The oldest boss on the council—an eighty-year-old patriarch named Don Carmine—stood up from his seat, raising his heavy cane.
"Victor Hartwell," Don Carmine pronounced coldly. "By unanimous vote of the Seven Families... your territory is stripped, your titles are revoked, and you are banished from the city of Chicago forever. If you step foot in this state after midnight... you will be hunted like a dog."
Victor slumped into a chair, broken, ruined, and completely stripped of his power.
Adrian turned to Hannah, taking both of her hands in his in front of the entire underworld elite.

"I promised I'd take his empire down," Adrian whispered, smiling warmly. "How did I do?"
Hannah laughed—that honest, beautiful laugh that filled the entire room with light. "You did pretty good, Mr. Mercer. Now take me home to our daughter."
