Chapter 4 - The War for Chicago

By morning, the Mercer estate was under full military lockdown.

Extra armed guards manned the perimeter walls, high-caliber rifles were mounted on the guard towers, and armored vehicles blocked the main driveway. The news of Victor Hartwell's failed hit on Hannah had reached the higher circles of Chicago's underworld, triggering an immediate declaration of war.

Inside the master suite—a room that had remained locked and untouched since Claire's death three years ago—Hannah lay under thick, down comforters.

Her head was neatly bandaged, and an IV drip was running medication into her arm.

Sitting on the edge of the large king-sized bed was six-year-old Lily. The little girl was holding a wooden hairbrush, gently brushing Hannah’s brown curls while whispering softly.

"See?" Lily whispered, looking over at her father who stood near the window. "I told you she was warm, Daddy."

Adrian walked over, a soft, rare smile touching his face. He knelt beside the bed, looking at Hannah, who was slowly opening her eyes.

"How are you feeling?" Adrian asked gently, taking her free hand in his.

Hannah looked around the opulent master bedroom—the high vaulted ceilings, the silk drapes, the golden morning light streaming through the windows. "Where... where am I? This isn't my room."

"This is my room," Adrian said softly. "And from now on, it's yours if you'll have it."

Hannah’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Lily, then up at Adrian. "Adrian... your father... the Hartwells... they're going to destroy everything you built if you keep me here. I'm just a maid from the south side. I don't belong in this world."

"You belong wherever you want to be," Adrian insisted, his dark eyes fierce with devotion. He squeezed her hand tightly. "I spent three years hiding behind business deals, mergers, and cold blood because I was terrified of loving someone again and losing them. But last night, when I saw your car in that ditch... I realized that a life without you isn't a life at all."

Hannah’s eyes filled with hot, happy tears. She reached out with her hand, cupping Adrian’s sharp cheek. He leaned into her touch, closing his eyes as if her soft palm was the only anchor keeping him anchored to the earth.

Suddenly, the heavy bedroom door creaked open.

Arthur Mercer walked in. He looked older, tired, the sharp edge of his ancient anger blunted by the reality of what Victor Hartwell had tried to do.

"Adrian," Arthur said quietly. "Victor Hartwell has summoned an emergency council meeting of all seven Chicago families at the Drake Hotel tonight. He claims you violated the syndicate code by attacking his men, and he's calling for a vote to strip you of your territory."

Adrian stood up, his posture instantly shifting back to that of a lethal commander. "Then we give them a vote."

"You can't go alone," Arthur warned. "Hartwell will have fifty armed men in that ballroom."

"He won't be alone," Hannah’s voice cut through the room.

Everyone turned to her. Hannah was slowly pushing the heavy covers off, sitting up in bed despite the pain in her side.

"Hannah, no," Adrian protested, rushing to her side. "You're injured. You need to rest."

"Victor Hartwell tried to kill me because he thought I was weak," Hannah said, her brown eyes blazing with a newfound, terrifying strength. "He thought because I wear a size 18 and scrub floors for a living, I'm invisible. I want to look him in the eye when you take his empire down."

Adrian looked at her, a profound sense of awe washing over him. This wasn't just the gentle woman who sat under dining tables—this was a queen standing up to claim her throne.

"Get her the best dress in Chicago," Adrian commanded Arthur. "We're going to a party."
