Chapter 8 - The Breach at the Docks

Rain poured down in heavy, icy sheets over the industrial docks of New Jersey. The sky was pitch black, illuminated only by the rhythmic flashing of distant lighthouse beams and the ambient red glow of shipping containers.
Inside a rotting, drafty warehouse at the edge of Pier 17, Elena Vasquez was tied to a wooden chair.
Her hair was damp, her face bruised where a Moretti enforcer had struck her when she tried to fight back. Her brother, Mateo, lay unconscious on the cold concrete floor a few feet away, bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead.
Standing in front of her was Vincent Moretti—the ruthless, cruel underboss of the Moretti crime family. He was a tall, greasy man with a jagged scar running down his cheek, wearing an expensive leather coat that smelled of cheap cigars and wet wool.
“I’m going to ask you one last time, girl,” Vincent said calmly, flicking the ash of his cigar onto the concrete floor near Elena’s boots. “Give me the entry codes for Dominic Russo’s side entrance. My men are waiting outside his estate right now. All we need is the code to disable the silent alarm.”
Elena spat a mixture of blood and saliva onto the tip of Vincent’s polished shoe.
“Go to hell,” she said, her voice shaking with pain but burning with defiance. “I will die before I let you touch those little girls.”
Vincent’s face darkened with rage. He raised his heavy hand, preparing to strike her again. “You stupid bitch. You think Dominic Russo cares about you? You were just a servant to him. He threw you out like garbage the second he suspected you!”
“It doesn't matter,” Elena whispered, looking him straight in the eye. “I won't let you hurt them.”
Vincent sneered, pulling a silenced pistol from inside his coat. He pointed the black barrel directly between Elena’s eyes.
“Then your usefulness has ended,” Vincent said coolly.
Before his finger could tighten around the trigger, the massive metal doors at the front of the warehouse didn't just open—they exploded off their hinges in a blinding flash of yellow light and deafening noise.
A flashbang grenade detonated in the center of the room, blinding Vincent’s henchmen.
A second later, the thunderous roar of automatic gunfire tore through the warehouse.
Dominic Russo stepped through the smoke and shattered metal like an unstoppable god of vengeance. He wore a heavy black tactical coat, his face cold, pale, and illuminated by the muzzle flashes of his weapon. Behind him, ten heavily armed Russo enforcers poured into the room, executing Moretti’s men with terrifying, surgical precision.
Vincent panicked, grabbing Elena around the neck and pulling her up as a human shield, pressing his gun against her temple.
“Stay back, Russo!” Vincent screamed, his voice cracking with sheer terror as he backed away toward the rear exit. “Stay back or I’ll blow her head off!”
Dominic stopped twenty feet away. The gunfire in the warehouse died down instantly as the remaining Moretti men were eliminated.
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the rhythmic patter of rain against the corrugated metal roof.
Dominic raised his weapon, lining up his shot with absolute calm. His dark eyes locked onto Vincent’s trembling hands.
“You made three mistakes tonight, Vincent,” Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly quiet, echoing through the hollow warehouse.
Vincent squeezed Elena’s neck tighter. “Shut up! Lower your gun!”
“First, you brought your squabble to my territory,” Dominic continued, stepping forward with deliberate, steady rhythm. “Second, you dared to threaten my children.”
He took another step. The distance between them shrank to fifteen feet.
“And third,” Dominic whispered, his eyes softening for a microsecond as he looked directly into Elena’s tear-filled eyes, “you put your filthy hands on the woman I love.”
BANG.
Dominic fired a single round. The bullet passed less than an inch from Elena’s ear, striking Vincent Moretti directly between the eyes.

Vincent dropped like a stone, releasing Elena.
Dominic dropped his weapon, rushed forward, and caught Elena in his arms before her knees hit the cold concrete floor.
