Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Over the next three weeks, the atmosphere in the Russo estate began to shift in small, subtle ways.

The heavy, dark curtains in the grand living rooms were drawn back, allowing warm sunlight to wash over the velvet sofas. The silence that had hung over the corridors for over a year began to crumble under the weight of small, everyday noises.

Dominic stayed home.

He canceled trips to Chicago and Miami. He handed over routine operations to Marco, his trusted underboss. For the first time in his life, the ruthless mob boss was working from his home study, leaving his door unlocked so he could listen to the faint sounds of life echoing from the floor below.

Every evening at five o’clock, under Elena’s quiet supervision, Dominic tried to re-enter his daughters’ world.

It was painful, awkward, and frustratingly slow. The first few days, the girls would instantly fall silent the moment Dominic entered the room. They would sit side-by-side on the rug, staring at their shoes, their small bodies rigid with tension.

“Don't force it,” Elena advised him late one evening as they stood in the kitchen pouring coffee. “Don't stand over them like a boss giving orders. Get down on the floor. Be small.”

Dominic had looked at her like she was crazy. A Don of the Russo family did not sit on the floor.

Yet, the next day, he took off his expensive suit jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and sat cross-legged on the playhouse rug. He picked up a wooden train and quietly rolled it back and forth on the track. He didn't ask them questions. He didn't plead with them to talk. He just played.

On the fifth day, Valentina slowly walked over and placed a wooden train car behind his engine.

On the ninth day, Mia sat in his lap while he read a book about dinosaurs.

And on the fourteenth day, while Dominic was sitting on the porch watching the sun set over the ocean, Lucia walked up behind him, tugged on his trousers, and whispered a single, fragile word:

“Daddy?”

Dominic wrapped his arms around his eldest daughter and wept quietly into her black curls.

As the days turned into weeks, Dominic found himself watching Elena with growing fascination. She was patient, gentle, and possessed a quiet strength that mesmerized him. She was unfazed by his wealth, unimpressed by his power, and entirely dedicated to the well-being of his girls.

He began finding excuses to be in the same room as her. He lingered in the kitchen while she prepared dinner. He stayed up late in the living room, reading reports while she folded laundry nearby, enjoying the quiet comfort of her presence.

A deep, electric tension began to build between them—an unspoken connection born of shared nights, soft smiles, and the mutual joy of seeing three small girls heal.

However, in Dominic’s world, peace was always a temporary illusion.

Late one Thursday evening, while Elena was putting the girls to bed upstairs, Marco arrived at the estate without warning. His dark eyes were filled with urgency as he paced back and forth across the study floor.

“We have a problem, Boss,” Marco said, dropping a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk.

Dominic picked up the folder and opened it. Inside were detailed surveillance photographs of Elena Vasquez. Photographs of her walking to her local grocery store, photographs of her catching a bus, and photographs of her meeting a dark-haired man in a leather jacket behind an alley in downtown Queens.

Dominic’s blood ran cold. The warmth in his chest turned to ice.

“What is this?” Dominic asked, his voice dead and dangerous.

“We ran a deeper check on her background, just like you asked last week,” Marco explained, leaning over the desk. “Her real name isn't just Elena Vasquez. Her brother is Mateo Vasquez. He’s a mid-level enforcer for the Moretti family—our primary rivals in New Jersey.”

Dominic stared at the photograph of Elena talking to the man in the leather jacket. His heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise.

“She’s a plant, Dominic,” Marco warned softly. “The Morettis put her in this house to spy on you. They used your daughters’ trauma to get her inside.”
