Chapter 5 - The Gift of Grace

By four o'clock on Christmas morning, the estate had been cleared, the red security lights had been turned off, and a deep, peaceful silence returned to the mansion.
The heavy steel door of the second-floor guest suite unlocked smoothly.
Elena stood near the window, holding a heavy iron fire poker she had grabbed from the hearth, standing protectively in front of the bedroom door where Noah was sleeping.
When the door opened and Luca walked in, her body slumped with overwhelming relief.
Luca stopped in the doorway. He looked tired. There was a smudge of dark soot on his cheek, and his clothes smelled faintly of snow and gunpowder, but his eyes were completely clear, bright, and filled with a profound sense of freedom.
He set his shoulder holster onto the side table, walked across the room, and took the fire poker gently from her hands, setting it aside.
“It’s over,” Luca said softly. “The Sinclairs are done. No one will ever threaten you or Noah again.”
Elena looked into his face, tears spilling over her dark lashes. “Did... did Vanessa really do all of that?”
“Yes,” Luca answered, reaching out to gently wipe a tear from her cheek with his thumb. “She and my uncle. They stole six years of our lives, Elena. They made you suffer in poverty while I lived in a cage of anger.”
He took both of her hands in his, holding them against his broad chest so she could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beating beneath his shirt.
“I spent six years believing you abandoned me,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with rare emotion. “And every single day of those six years, I hated myself for not being enough to make you stay. But tonight... when our son looked at me and asked why we had the same eyes... I realized my life didn't begin until he walked into that ballroom.”
Elena looked up at him, her heart aching with a bittersweet mix of past pain and rising hope. “Luca... your world is still dangerous. You’re the head of the Moretti family.”
“Not anymore,” Luca said firmly.
Elena blinked in surprise. “What?”
“I signed the transfer papers thirty minutes ago,” Luca revealed, a soft, beautiful smile touching his lips. “Marco is taking over the legal operations of the logistics network. The illegal routes have been permanently shut down and handed over to federal authorities through anonymous channels. The Moretti syndicate is finished, Elena. I am a free man.”
Elena stared at him, her mouth opening in disbelief. “You gave up your empire?”
“It wasn't an empire, Elena,” Luca said, framing her face with his hands, his gray eyes shining with an absolute, unshakeable love. “It was a prison. You and Noah are my home. You are the only empire I will ever need.”

Elena let out a choked sob, the final walls of doubt surrounding her heart crumbling into dust. She reached up, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a deep, passionate kiss that washed away six years of loneliness, pain, and winter frost.
Luca held her tightly against his heart, spinning her gently in the warm light of the fireplace, holding her as if he would never let her go again.
