Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the House

The Moretti estate in Westchester was a sprawling, stone fortress surrounded by two hundred acres of dense, snow-covered forest, protected by ten-foot iron gates, infrared cameras, and thirty elite guards.
By two o'clock on Christmas morning, the grand mansion was eerily quiet.
In the master guest suite on the second floor, Noah was fast asleep beneath a thick feather duvet, clutching a soft velvet pillow. The silver Saint Christopher pendant rested against his small chest, rising and falling with his steady breathing.
Elena sat on the edge of the bed, softly stroking her son’s dark curls.
The door opened silently. Luca stepped into the room, having removed his formal tuxedo jacket, now wearing a dark silk shirt with the top buttons undone. He walked over to the opposite side of the bed, looking down at the sleeping child.
“He sleeps like my father,” Luca said softly, his voice full of an overwhelming, unaccustomed tenderness. “My father used to curl his fingers into a small fist, just like that.”
Elena looked up at him. “He has your stubbornness, too. He wouldn't sleep tonight until I promised him he could ask you why you have a scar on your eyebrow tomorrow.”
A rare, beautiful smile touched Luca’s lips. “I’ll tell him the story. Though I might leave out the part where it involved a broken glass in a Brooklyn alley.”
The smile faded, replaced by the heavy gravity that constantly rested on his shoulders. He gestured toward the adjoining private sitting room.
Elena stood up gently, tucked the blanket around Noah, and followed Luca into the sitting room. A warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across the mahogany walls.
On the coffee table sat three thick, leather-bound folders.
“What are those?” Elena asked, sitting on the edge of the sofa.
Luca sat across from her, his expression turning to stone. “Six years ago, when you vanished, I ordered a full investigation. My uncle, Dominic Moretti, was the head of security for our family at the time. He presented me with reports claiming you had accepted two million dollars from a rival family to sell information, and that you fled to Europe when you realized I was onto you.”
Elena gasped, her hands clutching her lap. “That’s a lie! I never took a dollar! I didn't even know who your rivals were!”
“I know,” Luca said softly. “Because thirty minutes ago, Marco decrypted my uncle’s old private financial records from 2020. Dominic was skimming millions from our cargo routes. He knew that if I married you—a girl with no political background, no syndicate connections, and no greed—I would step away from the illegal side of the business, as my father had always wanted.”
Elena felt her blood run cold. “Dominic...”
“Dominic wanted the Moretti family to merge with the Sinclair organization,” Luca continued, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “The Sinclairs controlled the docks, the judges, and the distribution networks. Dominic used my private phone while I was in meetings to answer your calls. He was the one who sent the couriers with the photos. He made you believe I was a monster who traded you for power.”
“Where is Dominic now?” Elena asked, her voice trembling.
“He died three years ago,” Luca replied coldly. “Of a sudden stroke in his sleep. Or so I believed. But tonight, Marco found something else. Dominic’s offshore bank accounts were co-signed by another person.”
Luca reached down and opened the top folder, sliding a printed document across the table.
Elena looked at the document. At the bottom of the page, written in sharp, elegant cursive, was the signature of the co-owner of the offshore account:
Vanessa Sinclair.
Elena looked up in absolute horror. “Vanessa... she was in on it six years ago?”
“Vanessa was twenty-three,” Luca said, his gray eyes flashing with an icy, lethal fire. “Her father’s real estate empire was bankrupt. She needed the Moretti wealth to save her family. She and Dominic orchestrated your disappearance together so she could eventually take her place as my wife.”

Before Elena could process the terrifying truth, the radio on Luca’s collar clicked to life.
Marco’s voice came through, fast and urgent: “Boss! We have a security breach at the front gate! Three black vans just rammed the main gate checkpoints! It’s Sinclair’s private security team!”
