Chapter 10 - THE PROMISE KEPT

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Vance Estate was filled with brilliant white roses, crystal chandeliers, and soft orchestral music. Over two hundred guests—business leaders, city officials, estate staff, and close friends—gathered under the arched ceilings for the wedding of the decade.
I stood at the altar in a tailored black tuxedo, my heart beating with pure joy as the marble doors opened.
Elena walked down the aisle in a breathtaking lace wedding gown, holding a bouquet of white peonies. Beside her walked Nora, now four years old, wearing a beautiful flower-girl dress with a large light blue bow pinned in her curly hair.
When Elena reached the altar, I took her hand, looking into the eyes of the woman who had redefined my entire existence.
The minister smiled at us both. "Luca Vance, do you take Elena to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish till death do you part?"
"I do," I said, my voice strong and unwavering.
"And Elena, do you take Luca to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do," Elena whispered, tears of pure happiness shining in her eyes.
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride!"
I pulled Elena close, dipping her gently as I kissed her amidst deafening applause and cheers from the crowd!
During the reception on the moonlit terrace, Nora ran up to me, pulling on my tuxedo sleeve.
"Daddy!" she called out loudly.
It was the first time she had ever called me 'Daddy'.
The entire room seemed to fall quiet for a brief moment. I froze, looking down at the little girl who had changed my life forever with a soaked blue-stained shirt in a freezing laundry room.
I dropped to my knees, taking her small hands into mine—hands that were now smooth, warm, and completely healed.
"Yes, Nora?" I asked, my voice thick with emotion.
Nora smiled her bright, beautiful smile, reaching up to adjust my bowtie.
"Did I do good today?" she asked softly.
May you like
I pulled my daughter tight against my chest, lifting her into my arms as my wife stepped up beside us, wrapping her arms around us both under the starry Pennsylvania night sky.
"You did perfect, Nora," I whispered into her curls. "You did perfect."
