Chapter 15 - The Daughter They Should Never Have TakenDominic didn't shout.

That frightened Marco more than shouting would have.
He simply stood.
“Lock the building.”
Marco ran.
Every exit closed.
Security cameras were reviewed.
The footage showed Lily walking down the hallway.
A woman in a security uniform approached her.
Lily trusted her.
The woman led her through a service door.
Then the camera went black.
Dominic stared at the screen.
“Who was she?”
Marco zoomed in.
The woman's face appeared.
Evelyn gasped.
“I know her.”
Dominic turned.
“Who?”
“She worked for me.”
“Where?”
“Years ago.”
“What was her name?”
“Rebecca Sloan.”
Marco searched the database.
“Former Moretti employee.”
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
“When did she leave?”
“Seven years ago.”
The same year Lily entered his life.
Dominic felt sick.
“She was watching us since the beginning.”
A phone rang.
Dominic answered.
Samuel Voss spoke.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“Give me my daughter.”
“You're emotional.”
“Give me Lily.”
“Bring the Black Ledger.”
“You'll get it.”
“Of course.”
Dominic looked at the screen.
“Where?”
“Your father's grave.”
The call ended.
Marco shook his head.
“It's a trap.”
“I know.”
“You can't go.”
Dominic looked at him.
“My daughter is there.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“She's my daughter too.”
Dominic stopped.
Evelyn's eyes were filled with fear.
“But I'm not staying behind.”
Dominic looked at her for several seconds.
Then nodded.
“Fine.”
They arrived at the cemetery after midnight.
Snow covered Anthony Moretti's grave.
Dominic carried a briefcase.
Evelyn walked beside him.
Marco remained hidden nearby.
A voice echoed through the cemetery.
“You came.”
Samuel Voss stepped from behind a stone monument.
He was older than Dominic expected.
Calm.
Elegant.
Almost grandfatherly.
Two men stood behind him.
And between them was Lily.
Her hands were tied.
Dominic's heart broke.
“Lily.”
She looked at him.
“Dad.”
“Are you okay?”
She nodded.
Voss smiled.
“Touching.”
Dominic held up the briefcase.
“Release her.”
“Open it.”
Dominic opened the case.
Inside was a decoy drive.
Voss immediately noticed.
“That's not the ledger.”
Dominic smiled.
“No.”
Voss's smile vanished.
“You're wasting my time.”
“No.”
Dominic looked at the grave.
“I'm buying time.”
Suddenly headlights appeared around the cemetery.
Moretti security vehicles surrounded the area.
Voss laughed.
“You really think guns can solve this?”
“No.”
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
Then at Lily.
“I think truth can.”
He raised his phone.
The entire conversation had been recorded.
Every threat.
Every admission.
Voss's face changed.
“You wouldn't.”
Dominic smiled.
“You threatened my daughter.”
Then the cemetery lights turned on.
Federal agents emerged from the darkness.
Voss looked around.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
But then Lily suddenly screamed.
One of Voss's men had pulled her backward.
A gun pressed against her head.
Everything stopped.
May you like
Voss whispered:
“Then let's see what you're willing to sacrifice.”
