Chapter 13 - Uncle DanielNobody moved.

Dominic stood at the bottom of the staircase.
Daniel stood beside Lily.
Marco appeared behind Dominic with two guards.
Evelyn rushed from the bedroom.
“Lily!”
Daniel immediately stepped away from the girl.
“I didn't hurt her.”
Dominic looked at Lily.
“Come here.”
She ran down the stairs.
Dominic pulled her against him.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“You have five seconds to explain.”
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You haven't changed.”
“I've changed plenty.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You've become exactly what Anthony wanted.”
Dominic's eyes hardened.
“My father wanted a son who obeyed.”
Daniel's expression darkened.
“And instead he created a man who thinks he can control everything.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“You threatened my family.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“They did.”
“Who?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He reached into his coat and removed a photograph.
He handed it to Dominic.
It showed Anthony Moretti standing beside several men.
One of them was Victor Hale.
Another was Daniel.
But the third man was unfamiliar.
Dominic stared.
“Who is he?”
Daniel whispered:
“Samuel Voss.”
The name meant nothing.
But Evelyn reacted immediately.
“Voss?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You've heard it.”
“My father mentioned them.”
Dominic turned.
“What do you know?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“My father used to work for a company called Voss International.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Dominic looked back at the photograph.
“What does Voss want?”
Daniel's answer was simple.
“The Moretti company.”
Dominic frowned.
“They can't have it.”
Daniel shook his head.
“They don't want the company.”
“Then what?”
Daniel pointed at Lily.
“They want her.”
Silence.
Dominic's hand tightened around Lily's shoulder.
“Why?”
“Because Lily is the legal heir to something your father hid.”
Dominic stared.
“What?”
“The Black Ledger.”
Dominic felt a chill.
He had heard the name once.
A book containing the names of every organization that had controlled Moretti's illegal operations for decades.
A book that could destroy powerful people.
Daniel continued.
“Anthony didn't destroy it.”
“Where is it?”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Your daughter has already seen it.”
Lily frowned.
“I have?”
Daniel nodded.
“Remember the rabbit?”
She looked at Mr. Button.
“The rabbit?”
“Your father repaired that rabbit many years ago.”
Dominic stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel smiled.
“The original Black Ledger was never kept in a safe.”
He pointed toward the rabbit.
“It was hidden inside something nobody would suspect.”
Lily's face went pale.
“You mean Mr. Button?”
Daniel nodded.
Dominic immediately took the rabbit.
He examined the old stitching.
One section was different.
Freshly repaired.
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
“Who repaired this?”
She hesitated.
“Dominic…”
“Who?”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily tore the ear when she was little.”
Dominic carefully opened the seam.
Something metallic fell onto the carpet.
A tiny black memory card.
Everyone stared.
Daniel smiled.
“Your father knew someday they would come.”
Dominic picked up the card.
“What is on it?”
Daniel looked toward the windows.
“Everything.”

Then every light in the house went out.
A gunshot shattered the darkness.
