Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Reckoning

Forty-eight hours later.

The emergency board meeting at Mercer Meridian headquarters was chaotic. News of Daniel’s federal disclosures had leaked to the press, causing stock prices to plunge fifteen percent in pre-market trading.

At the head of the boardroom table sat Julian Sterling, the son of the late Richard Sterling, who had assumed his father's board seat. Julian was flanked by four corporate attorneys, looking smug and confident.

"Daniel has lost his mind," Julian announced to the assembled board members. "He is destroying this company over a personal vendetta regarding a woman from his past. I move for an immediate vote to remove Daniel Mercer as CEO."

"Seconded," one of Julian's allies called out.

Before the vote could be called, the grand frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Daniel walked in, dressed in a sharp dark suit. But he wasn't alone.

Beside him walked Sarah Reed, dressed in an elegant business suit, her posture tall and dignified. Behind them walked federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, led by Special Agent Marcus Cole.

Julian stood up, his face hardening. "Daniel, you can't bring unauthorized civilians into a confidential board meeting!"

"Sarah Reed isn't a civilian, Julian," Daniel said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "She is the co-founder of Mercer Meridian. And as of an hour ago, the federal court has restored her thirty-percent voting equity that your father illegally concealed for nine years."

Julian’s face drained of color. "What... what nonsense is this?!"

Agent Cole stepped forward, holding a stack of federal arrest warrants. "Julian Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and paying bribes to hold Sarah Reed in unlawful confinement. Victor Vance was apprehended two hours ago at the border and has given a full confession naming you as his employer."

Gasps echoed across the boardroom table. Board members backed away from Julian as federal agents stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"You can't do this to me!" Julian screamed as he was dragged toward the exit. "This is my empire!"

"It was never your empire, Julian," Daniel said coldly as the doors shut behind him. "It was built on a lie. And today, the truth took it back."
