Chapter 4 - The Storming of the Gate

At 3:00 AM, a convoy of four black armored Suburbans pulled up to the gates of the County Detention Facility.
Daniel stepped out into the freezing rain, flanked by Arthur, Frank, and a federal marshal holding an emergency release order signed directly by a federal judge.
Inside the sterile processing room, the warden—a man who had been receiving monthly "consulting fees" from Mercer Meridian’s shadow accounts—tried to stall.
"Mr. Mercer, this is irregular," the warden stammered, looking at the legal injunction. "Miss Reed is being held under federal administrative hold—"
"The federal hold was fraudulent, signed by a corrupt judge who was arrested twenty minutes ago," Arthur interrupted, slapping the judicial order onto the counter. "Release Sarah Reed immediately, or you will be named as a co-conspirator in human trafficking and unlawful imprisonment."
Ten minutes later, the heavy iron door at the end of the hallway chimed and opened.
A woman walked out. She was pale, wearing a gray jumpsuit, her wrists bruised and her hair tangled. But when she raised her eyes and saw Daniel standing under the fluorescent lights, she stopped in her tracks.
"Daniel...?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling.
Daniel didn't say a word. He closed the distance between them in three long strides and pulled her into his arms. Sarah collapsed against his chest, sobbing hysterically, the years of pain, fear, and isolation breaking apart in his hold.
"I'm sorry," Daniel murmured into her hair, holding her tightly. "I'm so sorry it took me so long. I didn't know, Sarah... I swear to God I didn't know."
"Noah... Lily..." Sarah choked out, clutching his suit jacket. "Victor took them... he said he was going to—"

"They are safe," Daniel assured her, holding her face in his hands. "Lily is at the hospital under the best pediatric care in the country. She's going to recover. And Noah... Noah saved her, Sarah. He brought her to me."
Sarah fell to her knees, weeping tears of overwhelming gratitude. "He found you... my brave little boy found you..."
