Chapter 4 - The Web of Betrayal

The library fell into a silence so thick you could hear the crackle of the fireplace.

The two NYPD detectives near the door looked at each other nervously, their hands drifting toward their sidearms, completely unsure of what was happening.

"You've lost your mind," Senator Romano breathed, taking a step back toward the door. "You’re insane, Moretti. My daughter is dead, and you’re spinning crazy conspiracy theories to protect a murderer!"

"Let's look at the timeline," Aleandro said, pulling a leather file folder from his desk drawer. "Three months ago, the Federal Grand Jury opened a sealed indictment against you for bribery and treason regarding the Brooklyn port expansion. You knew you were going to prison for thirty years."

Romano swallowed hard, his throat dry.

"You needed a way out," Aleandro continued, tossing a stack of bank statements onto the desk. "If I died, our engagement contract had a clause stating that sixty percent of the Moretti shipping assets would temporarily revert to the Romano estate to 'protect' Valentina’s financial future. With me dead, you would have had three hundred million dollars in liquid cash to bribe the prosecutors and escape to South America."

"That's speculation!" Romano shouted. "Pure fantasy!"

At that moment, the doors of the library swung open.

Marco walked in, holding an iPad. His face was pale, his jaw set tight. He walked straight up to Aleandro and handed him the screen.

"We cracked Valentina’s encrypted phone, Boss," Marco said, his voice dripping with disgust. "And we pulled the deleted emails from her personal server."

Aleandro looked down at the screen. He scrolled through three pages of text messages, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his face.

"Well, well," Aleandro murmured. "It seems your daughter wasn't as innocent as you claimed, Senator."

Aleandro turned the screen toward Romano.

"These are text messages between Valentina and her father from yesterday afternoon," Aleandro told the room. "Valentina wrote: 'Are you sure the compound is undetectable? I don't want Aleandro suffering before he signs the asset transfer papers.' And you replied, Senator: 'It works in seconds. Just make sure his glass is the one with the gold rim.'"

The two NYPD detectives gasped. One of them immediately pulled out his handcuffs.

"You..." Romano stammered, staring at the screen in utter horror. "Valentina... she knew?"

"She wasn't your victim, Senator. She was your accomplice," Aleandro said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "She knew about the poison. She was the one who was supposed to hand me the gold-rimmed glass during the toast. But she got arrogant. She got humiliated by a three-year-old girl dancing in the ballroom. She lost her composure, picked up the wrong glass off the tray in a hurry to make her grand speech, and drank her own poison."

"No... no!" Romano fell back against a chair, clutching his chest, tears finally streaming down his face. "No! My sweet girl... my Valentina... she took the wrong glass?"

"She died by her own cruelty," Aleandro said coldly. "She brought poison into my house to slaughter me, and fate handed it back to her."

Romano sank to his knees on the rug, weeping hysterically, the weight of his own monstrous greed crushing him. He had murdered his only child with his own hands.

"Detectives," Aleandro said quietly, addressing the two police officers. "Take the Senator away. Hand him over to the federal authorities along with these files. Tell them the Moretti family considers this matter closed."

The detectives moved quickly, grabbing Romano by his arms and hauling him up off the floor. The Senator did not resist. He was broken, hollowed out, crying out his daughter's name as he was dragged out of the library into the night.

Marco closed the door behind them.

"Boss," Marco said quietly. "What about the maid? What about Sophia?"

Aleandro stood up from his desk and walked over to the large window overlooking the gardens. The rain had started to fall, glistening against the glass like fallen tears.

"Sophia is not a maid anymore, Marco," Aleandro said softly.

Marco blinked. "Boss?"

"Announce to the family," Aleandro ordered, turning around with an expression of absolute authority. "Announce to every captain, every soldier, and every ally from New York to Sicily... that the engagement is off. And that next month, I am marrying Sophia Vance."

Marco’s eyes widened in disbelief. "The maid? Boss, the other families... they will think it’s a weakness! They will think you've lost your mind over a girl from nowhere!"

Aleandro stepped up to Marco, his dark eyes burning with terrifying intensity.

"Let them think whatever they want," Aleandro whispered. "And if anyone dares to disrespect her... or her daughter... show them what happens to people who touch my family."
