Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the House

The master bedroom of the Moretti mansion was vast, lined with dark mahogany wood and heavy velvet curtains.
Emma lay in the middle of an enormous king-sized bed, fast asleep. Her small hand was firmly wrapped around the ear of her faded stuffed rabbit, her breathing soft and rhythmic.
The heavy door creaked open. Sophia stepped into the room, running across the thick carpet and dropping to her knees beside the bed. She buried her face in the blanket, weeping silently as she pressed soft kisses all over Emma’s forehead and cheeks.
Aleandro walked in behind her, shutting the door quietly. He stood at the foot of the bed, watching the tiny girl sleep. He looked completely out of place in his formal white shirt amidst the soft blankets, yet his eyes held a tenderness no one in New York had ever seen from him.
"She looks like my mother," Aleandro murmured quietly. "My mother had the same dark curls."
Sophia looked up, wiping her eyes. "She’s smart, Aleandro. She knows her alphabet already. She loves to dance when it rains."
Aleandro sat gently on the edge of the mattress. He reached out with a single, calloused finger and touched Emma’s soft hand. The small child stirred slightly in her sleep, her tiny fingers wrapping instinctively around her father's large thumb.
Aleandro’s breath caught. He looked down at those tiny fingers holding his, feeling a sudden, terrifying weight settle on his shoulders. He was a man who owned entire city blocks, who commanded hundreds of armed soldiers, but in this moment, he felt utterly helpless against the love blooming in his chest.
"I will give her everything," Aleandro whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Every school she wants. Every country she wants to see. A thousand dresses. A million dolls."
"She doesn't need a million dolls, Aleandro," Sophia said gently, putting her hand over his. "She just needs to be safe. This world... your world... it killed Valentina tonight. It almost killed me. If anyone finds out who Emma really is..."
"No one will hurt her," Aleandro promised, his eyes hardening into steel. "I will tear this city apart before I let anyone bring harm to either of you."
A light knock sounded at the door.
Aleandro gently disengaged his thumb from Emma’s grip and walked to the entrance. He slipped into the hallway, where Marco was waiting with a laptop in his hands.
"Boss," Marco whispered, looking grim. "We went through the private pantry footage. The main security camera in the hallway was wiped clean ten minutes before the toast. It was a professional job. Internal wipe."
"Who had access to the master security panel?" Aleandro asked.
"Only four people," Marco replied, pulling up a list on the screen. "You, me, head of security Captain Vance... and Valentina’s father, Senator Romano."
Aleandro’s eyes narrowed. Senator Romano was one of the most powerful political figures in the state. He had arranged the marriage between Valentina and Aleandro to consolidate his control over the city's construction unions and maritime trade routes.
"Where is the Senator now?"
"He’s downstairs in the library," Marco said. "He’s hysterical. He’s demanding we hand over the maid to the NYPD immediately. He’s calling the Police Commissioner every five minutes."
"Tell him I will meet him in five minutes," Aleandro said. "And Marco?"
"Yes, Boss?"
"Run a forensic background check on Valentina’s personal accounts over the last six months. Look for offshore transfers to medical research facilities or chemical laboratories."
Marco looked confused. "Valentina? Boss, she’s the victim."
"Just do it," Aleandro ordered cold-bloodedly. "People who spend a million dollars on a whim don't get murdered by accident."
Ten minutes later, Aleandro walked into the mansion’s sprawling leather-bound library.
Senator Romano was pacing in front of the marble fireplace, an unlit cigar clenched tightly between his teeth. His silver hair was disheveled, and his expensive tailor-made suit was wrinkled. Two NYPD detectives stood awkwardly near the door, looking terrified to be in the Moretti home.
"Aleandro!" Senator Romano shouted, stepping forward with his fist raised. "What is taking so long? Why isn't that damn maid in a police van? My daughter... my beautiful Valentina is lying dead in your ballroom!"
"Sit down, Senator," Aleandro said softly, stepping behind his large oak desk.
"Don't tell me to sit down!" Romano screamed, his face turning purple. "You failed to protect her! I gave you my daughter to cement our alliance, and you let a low-class servant put poison in her glass! I want that girl, Sophia, arrested right now, or I will bring the entire federal government down on your head!"
Aleandro slowly sat down in his leather chair. He picked up a silver cigar cutter, casually snipping the tip of a Cuban cigar.
"The poison was military-grade VX agent, Senator," Aleandro said, his voice chillingly calm. "It costs roughly two hundred thousand dollars a gram on the black market. Do you know how much a maid makes at my estate?"
Senator Romano hesitated, his eyes narrowing. "What does that matter? She was paid off by your enemies!"
"A maid making fifteen dollars an hour does not have contacts in the Russian chemical black market," Aleandro continued, striking a match and lighting his cigar. "Nor does she have the passcodes to wipe my digital security servers. But do you know who does have access to chemical brokers, Senator?"
Aleandro leaned forward, blowing a thick cloud of blue smoke across the polished desk.
"Politicians with intelligence committee security clearances."
Senator Romano went completely still. The dark red color drained from his face, leaving him pale and trembling.

"Are you... are you accusing me of killing my own daughter?" Romano whispered, his voice shaking with outrage.
"No," Aleandro replied, his dark eyes fixing onto the Senator’s trembling hands. "I am accusing you of planning my murder... and watching your daughter drink the cup you prepared for me."
