Chapter 5 - The Shattered Mansion

The screen on Richard’s desk erupted into a frenzy of incoming video calls. His board of directors, his chief technology officer, his global security teams—all of them were screaming through the speakers as the core servers of a hundred-billion-dollar empire began to blink out of existence one by one.

"Richard! What is happening?" his CTO yelled from a screen. "The entire global platform is locking us out! It’s reading a hard-coded time-bomb in the root directory! We need the master key or the company goes dark in two hours!"

Richard didn't look at the screens. He didn't look at his panicked executives.

He slowly turned his head to look at Lila, who was staring at him in complete confusion, and then at little Emma, who had opened her dark eyes, looking at him with the exact same calm, unyielding gaze her father had possessed eleven years ago in Kyoto.

The gala outside the doors was suddenly filled with shouts as the mansion's smart systems failed, plunging the grand ballroom into total darkness, leaving only the emergency backup lights casting a surreal, bloody red glow over Seattle’s elite.

The billionaire founder of Callahan Global dropped to his knees on the shattered glass of his own study floor. He looked at the maid’s daughter—the barefoot, three-year-old girl in the torn yellow dress—and realized that the grandest house on Lake Washington was completely empty.

His empire hadn't been destroyed by a competitor or a hacker. It had been brought to its knees by a child’s whisper, carrying the truth of a ghost across eleven years of silence.

"Lila," Richard whispered, his voice cracking as he bowed his head before his employee. "Please. Give me the drive. I will give you half of everything I own. I will give her his name. I will make her the richest child in America."

Lila looked at the powerful billionaire groveling at her feet, then looked down at her daughter, who simply reached out her tiny hand and touched her mother’s cheek.

"No, Mr. Callahan," Lila said, her voice rising with a strength she didn't know she possessed as the red emergency lights flashed around them. "You won't give us anything. From now on, you will ask my daughter for permission."
