Chapter 1 - The Code of a Ghost

The pianist, a distinguished man from the Seattle Symphony, looked up from the keys, his fingers trembling slightly. "Where did she learn that sentence?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper. "That isn't just Japanese. That’s a specific poetic phrasing. It’s an old Kyoto dialect idiom."

Lila reached down, scooped Emma into her arms, and held her tightly against her chest. "I’m sorry," Lila stammered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "She... she just repeats things she hears on the old tapes I play at night. It’s nothing. We're leaving."

"Wait," Richard Callahan's voice cut through the room.

He stepped out from the shadow of the doorway, his tall frame suddenly commanding the entire space. His face was entirely devoid of color, his hazel eyes locked onto the little girl with a fierce, almost terrifying intensity.

Helena Voss immediately smoothed her gold silk dress, stepping toward him with a practiced, society smile. "Richard, darling, I am so sorry about this. I'll have security escort her out immediately. It is completely unacceptable that the staff is harboring children in the service wings—"

"Helena, shut up," Richard said.

His voice wasn't loud, but it had a cold, razor-sharp edge that made the billionaire socialite freeze mid-sentence, her mouth dropping open in shock.

Richard walked slowly toward Lila and Emma. The silence in the room was so heavy that the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a countdown. He stopped three feet away from the maid, his eyes dropping to the little girl’s face. Up close, he could see the slight curl of her dark hair, the shape of her eyes, and the tiny, distinct mole just beneath her left collarbone.

Richard felt the ground beneath his expensive leather shoes turn to dust.

"What tapes, Lila?" Richard asked, his voice raw.

Lila took a step back, her arms tightening around Emma. "Just... old language tapes, Mr. Callahan. My late partner... he left them for her before he passed away. Please don't fire me. I need this job. I won't bring her here again, I swear."

"The man who recorded those tapes," Richard said, his breath hitching in his throat. "Was his name Kenji? Kenji Watanabe?"

Lila’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She didn't answer, but the sudden, sharp intake of her breath gave Richard every answer he needed.
