Chapter 4 - The Final Algorithm

Richard walked over to Lila, his breath catching in his throat. He gently took the voice recorder from her hands. His thumb found the play button and pressed it.
A low, static-filled hiss filled the opulent, multimillion-dollar study. Then, a voice spoke. It was a deep, resonant, familiar voice, speaking in English with a soft Japanese accent.
"Hello, my sweet Emma. If you are listening to this, it means Papa is resting now. I am sorry I could not hold your hand. But I have left you a gift. In this box, there is a small black flash drive hidden in the lining. It contains a code. A beautiful piece of math your Papa built a long time ago with a man who used to be his brother."
Richard gasped, dropping his scotch glass. It shattered against the marble floor, but he didn't even blink.
The voice on the recording continued, its tone turning solemn. "The man’s name is Richard Callahan. He owns a big company now. He thinks he bought the world, but he forgot that code cannot breathe without its heart. The drive contains the final decryption key for the Callahan Global architecture. Without it, their system will experience an absolute structural collapse on the eleventh anniversary of my departure. That date is tomorrow, Emma."
Richard’s phone suddenly began to vibrate violently in his pocket. Then his private satellite phone began to ring. Then the emergency alert system on his wall-mounted monitors flashed a deep, terrifying crimson.
CRITICAL SYSTEM FAILURE: ARCHITECTURE DECRYPTION TIMEOUT.

The voice of the dead man echoed through the room one last time, filled not with malice, but with a tragic, absolute calm.
"I did not leave this to destroy him, Emma. I left it to save you. If Richard Callahan ever wants his empire to see another sunrise, he will have to look at my daughter. He will have to look at the woman he left in the dark. He will have to pay the debt he owes to the Watanabe name."
