Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

One year later.

The Colorado air was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of pine and fresh rain. I stood on the wraparound porch of the new home I had purchased in Boulder, watching the wind rustle through the massive oak trees in the front yard.

Inside, the house was warm and filled with light. Lily, now a little over a year old, was taking unsteady, wobbly steps across the living room rug, giggling as Elias Thorne clapped his hands to encourage her.

Elias had become a grandfather figure to Lily. After the trial, which ended with Nathan receiving a forty-year federal prison sentence without the possibility of parole, and Victoria receiving a five-year sentence for her part in the cover-up, Elias had taken me under his wing.

I hadn't just taken a settlement; I had taken my life back. The courts had liquidated Nathan’s assets to repay the stolen pension funds, but Elias and Arthur Sterling had insisted on securing my financial future, compensating me for the trauma and giving me a significant stake in the reformed Sterling Enterprises, which Arthur now ran with honor.

I wasn't the timid, easily manipulated girl who had married a billionaire out of sheer awe. I was a board member. I was a survivor.

The sound of tires crunching on gravel pulled my attention to the driveway. A dark blue truck parked, and Arthur Sterling stepped out, carrying a large wrapped box. He walked up the porch steps, his weathered face breaking into a warm smile.

"Happy first birthday to the little boss," Arthur said, handing me the gift. "I hope you don't mind, but I bought her a pony. It's boarding at my ranch until she's big enough."

I laughed, a real, unburdened sound. "Arthur, she can barely walk across the carpet. A pony?"

"Sterling women need to learn how to ride early," he winked, stepping inside to join Elias.

I stayed on the porch for a moment longer, looking out at the mountains. Those same mountains had almost claimed our lives a year ago. They had been cold, unforgiving, and terrifying. Now, they were just mountains—beautiful, quiet, and peaceful.

I walked back inside, scooping Lily up into my arms. She rested her little head against my shoulder, safe, loved, and entirely mine. The cold was finally gone, and the future was entirely ours to write.
