Chapter 4 - The Mechanics of Betrayal

The courtroom erupted into whispers.

A mechanic in greasy overalls shuffled in behind Arthur, looking terrified.

"Your Honor," Sarah Jenkins said, seamlessly taking control of the moment. "May I present Marcus Vance, the lead mechanic at the Aspen private garage exclusively used by the Sterling family. Mr. Vance has just signed a sworn immunity affidavit with federal prosecutors."

Judge Hastings looked at Nathan, visibly sweating now, unable to protect a man whose ship was rapidly sinking in public view. "Proceed."

Marcus Vance stepped up to the witness stand. He refused to look at Nathan. "Mr. Sterling paid me fifty thousand dollars in cash the morning of January 14th," the mechanic said, his voice shaking. "He told me to drain the brake fluid and sever the hydraulic lines on his wife's SUV. He said... he said he needed it to look like she hit a patch of black ice on the pass."

"Liar!" Nathan roared, slamming his fists on the defense table. "He’s being paid off by Arthur to ruin me!"

Arthur stepped forward. "I didn't pay him, Nathan. The guilt of knowing a three-day-old infant was in that car ate him alive. He kept the security footage of you handing him the cash in his garage." Arthur turned to the judge, handing a flash drive to the bailiff. "The video is right here, Your Honor. Along with the offshore account routing numbers Nathan used to bankrupt the employee pension fund."

Judge Hastings stared at the evidence, realizing his own career would be destroyed if he sided with Nathan now. The judge slammed his gavel.

"Motion for custody denied," Hastings barked. "Furthermore, based on this new evidence, I am issuing an immediate restraining order against Nathan Sterling. The defendant is a clear and present danger."

Nathan lunged across the table toward me, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. "You ruined my life! I gave you everything!"

Before he could reach me, Elias’s security and the court bailiffs tackled him to the floor. As he was dragged out of the courtroom, screaming obscenities, I held Lily against my shoulder, burying my face in her soft, warm hair. We had won. The nightmare was breaking.

But a cornered animal is always the most dangerous.
