Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Conservatory

Nathan’s hand was already raised, signaling the four private security guards positioned near the champagne fountain, when the heavy oak and glass doors of the conservatory swung fully open. The chill of the Colorado afternoon swept through the room, shivering the delicate white orchids that lined the aisle.
The security guards froze. They did not step forward to intercept the intruder, because the man who walked in behind me was the one who signed their paychecks.
Elias Thorne, the billionaire majority shareholder of Sterling Enterprises and Nathan’s former mentor, stepped into the light. At seventy-two, Elias possessed a quiet, terrifying gravity. He did not wear a tuxedo. He wore a heavy wool overcoat, his silver-tipped cane striking the marble floor with the rhythmic finality of a gavel.
Behind him stood two federal agents in dark suits.
Nathan’s polished veneer cracked. The color drained from his face, leaving him as pale as his bride’s gown. Celeste Morgan, realizing the shift in the room’s atmosphere, took a slow, deliberate step away from the altar.
"Elias," Nathan said, his voice tightening as he attempted to project authority. "This is a private family event. Claire is deeply unwell. We are trying to handle her episode discreetly."
Elias stopped beside me. He looked at the sleeping infant secured against my chest, his expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening into granite as he looked back at Nathan.
"She doesn't look unwell to me, Nathan," Elias’s voice boomed, echoing off the glass ceiling. "She looks like a mother who survived a blizzard because her husband stranded her on a mountain pass with cut brake lines."
A collective gasp rippled through the two hundred guests. Victoria Sterling pressed her hand to her throat, her designer pearls clattering against her chest.
"That is an absurd, slanderous lie!" Victoria shrieked, though her eyes darted nervously toward the exits. "Claire has suffered from severe postpartum psychosis! She ran away into the snow! Nathan spent thousands on private investigators trying to find her!"
I stepped forward, no longer the terrified, freezing woman they had left to die six weeks ago. "You spent thousands, Victoria, to ensure I would never be found. But you didn't anticipate the storm washing out the access road, forcing me to take shelter in the old ranger station. And you certainly didn't anticipate what I found stuffed inside Lily’s diaper bag before Nathan locked us out."
I reached into my coat pocket with my free hand and pulled out a small, encrypted black hard drive.
Nathan’s eyes locked onto the drive. For the first time since I met him, the untouchable golden boy of Aspen looked genuinely terrified.
"Nathan," Elias said, his tone chillingly calm. "When Claire came to me three days ago with this drive, I assumed it was a mistake. I assumed my protégé wouldn't be foolish enough to embezzle four hundred million dollars from our corporate pension funds and route them through shell companies registered in his newborn daughter’s name. I assumed he wouldn't try to murder his wife to ensure she couldn't testify about the financial discrepancies she accidentally uncovered in his home office."
"It’s a forgery!" Nathan yelled, dropping the facade entirely. He looked at the guests, at Celeste’s horrified parents, at the board members murmuring in the pews. "She’s insane! Arrest her!"

The two federal agents stepped past Elias, their badges catching the afternoon light. "Nathan Sterling," the lead agent said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and the attempted murder of Claire and Lily Sterling. We also have a warrant for Victoria Sterling for conspiracy and obstruction of justice."
The wedding dissolved into chaos.
