Chapter 5 - The Healing Touch

Three weeks later.
The summer sun was warm and golden, casting long, cheerful shadows across the green lawn of the hospital’s courtyard park.
Toby Sherman was sitting on a wooden bench, wearing a pair of bright red overalls and a yellow baseball cap. His cheeks had regained their healthy pink color, his breathing was deep and clear, and his eyes sparkled with innocent joy as he ate a strawberry ice cream cone.
Naomi sat beside him on the bench, wearing a comfortable linen dress, watching him eat.
"Dr. Naomi?" Toby asked, looking up at her with big, curious brown eyes.
"Yes, Toby?"
"Are you coming to my house for my birthday party next week?" Toby asked, getting a smudge of strawberry ice cream on his chin. "Daddy said I can have a bouncy castle shaped like a dragon!"
Naomi smiled, taking a napkin and gently wiping the ice cream from his chin. "I won't be able to make it to the party, sweetie. But I sent a big box of Lego space shuttles to your house this morning."
Toby’s face lit up with absolute delight. "The ones with the real rockets?!"
"The extra-large ones," Naomi promised, tapping his nose.
A shadow fell over the bench as Elijah walked up through the garden path.
He was dressed simply in a plain white shirt and dark jeans—a stark contrast to the tailored suits he used to wear. His face looked rested, quieter, and far more grounded than it had ever been during his time as a corporate titan.
"Hey, buddy," Elijah said gently, ruffling Toby’s hair. "Go run over to the swing set with Nurse Fiona for a minute. Daddy needs to say goodbye to Dr. Naomi."
"Okay!" Toby cheered, grabbing his ice cream and sprinting across the grass toward Fiona, who was waiting near the playground.
Elijah stood beside the bench, looking down at Naomi.
"The criminal trial for Cassandra was finalized this morning," Elijah said quietly. "She pleaded guilty to all counts. She’s going to state prison for twenty-five years."
Naomi nodded slowly. "And the company?"
"Sherman Global’s new independent board has divested Aegis Biopharma and turned the XX-904 research division over to a non-profit pediatric research institute," Elijah replied. "All profits from the patent will go directly to funding free medical care for children with rare neurological conditions."
"That's a good decision, Elijah," Naomi said genuinely.
Elijah pulled a small blue envelope from his jacket pocket and set it gently on the wooden bench beside her.
"What's this?" Naomi asked.
"It’s the deed to the new Pediatric Emergency & Critical Care Wing at Saint Jude’s," Elijah said softly. "The board unanimously voted to name it the Dr. Naomi Wheeler Pediatric Trauma Center. It comes with an unrestricted twenty-million-dollar research endowment, funded entirely from my private liquidation."
Naomi looked at the blue envelope, then looked up at Elijah. "Elijah... you don't owe me a wing."
"I know," Elijah said, his voice dropping into a sincere, quiet whisper. "You didn't save Toby for a building or money. You saved him because of who you are. This isn't a bribe, Naomi. And it isn't an attempt to buy back your heart. It’s just... a tool for you to save thousands more kids like Toby."
Elijah stepped back, offering her a soft, respectful smile—a smile free of ownership, free of pride, and full of deep, permanent respect.

"Thank you, Naomi," Elijah said softly. "For everything."
He turned and walked back across the green grass toward his son, taking Toby’s hand as they walked together toward the courtyard exit.
