Chapter 2 - The Mask Breaks

The VIP waiting wing of Saint Jude Children's Hospital was designed to feel like a five-star hotel lobby: plush velvet armchairs, floor-to-ceiling glass, and soft ambient lighting.
Right now, it felt like a staging ground for a war.
Elijah Sherman sat on a sleek leather couch, his arms resting on his knees, his face buried in his hands. His bespoke Italian suit was stained with mud and dried hospital rain. The man who sat atop a forty-billion-dollar empire, who had built a reputation for cold, unyielding corporate dominance, looked entirely broken.
Ten feet away, Cassandra Kelley was pacing back and forth on her four-inch red bottoms. Her blonde hair was styled to perfection, but her dark eyes were darting nervously around the room. She held an encrypted smartphone against her ear, her voice dropping into a harsh, frantic whisper.
"...I don't care what the legal team says!" Cassandra hissed into the phone. "Get the injunction ready! If that doctor releases any preliminary statements to the health board, we pull all philanthropic funding from this hospital by sunrise! Do you understand me?!"
"Who are you threatening, Cassandra?"
Naomi’s voice cut through the quiet room like a blade.
Cassandra froze, spinning around. She quickly ended the call and slipped her phone into her coat pocket, instantly adjusting her face into an expression of theatrical grief.
"Dr. Wheeler," Cassandra sneered, her voice dripping with artificial innocence. "How is my sweet stepson? Why have the nurses blocked us from going into his room? Elijah and I have been waiting for hours! This is unacceptable medical misconduct!"
Elijah bolted up from the couch, his eyes wild as he stepped between Cassandra and Naomi.
"Naomi," Elijah begged, his voice hoarse, completely devoid of his usual arrogance. "Please. How is Toby? Is he going to be okay? The nurses said you moved him!"
Naomi stood with her hands tucked inside her lab coat pockets, her posture straight, her eyes fixed on her ex-husband with unflinching clarity.
"Toby is stable," Naomi stated clearly. "His airway edema has receded, his oxygen saturation is back at ninety-eight percent, and his vital signs are normalizing."
Elijah let out a massive, shuddering breath, dropping his head as if a mountain had been lifted off his chest. "Thank God... thank God..."
"Don't thank God yet, Elijah," Naomi said, her voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp and cold. "Because if he had stayed in your home another twenty-four hours, you would be planning his funeral."
Cassandra’s eyes flared with anger. "How dare you speak to Elijah like that! You bitter, vindictive bitch! You’re just using our child's medical emergency to vent your frustration because Elijah threw you out six months ago! You were a nobody before him, and you’re a nobody now!"
"Cassandra, shut up!" Elijah roared, turning on her with a rage so sudden and violent that Cassandra actually took a step back, her mouth agape.
Elijah turned back to Naomi, his hands trembling. "Naomi... what are you talking about? What did you find?"
Naomi slowly pulled a printed copy of the toxicology report from her coat and held it out.
Elijah took it, his eyes skimming the technical terms. "Compound XX-904? Aegis Biopharma? This... this is our pediatric trial drug. How could Toby have come into contact with a Phase II clinical trial compound? It’s stored in vaulted bio-containment units at our research lab in Boston!"
"It wasn't in Boston, Elijah," Naomi said, her gaze shifting slowly to Cassandra. "It was in a liquid dropper bottle concealed inside your fiancée’s handbag. The same dropper bottle Toby told me was his 'cherry medicine.'"
The atmosphere in the VIP lounge went dead silent.
Elijah turned his head slowly, looking at Cassandra as if seeing her for the very first time.
Cassandra’s face went completely pale, her composure breaking into frantic, ugly panic. "That's a lie! She planted it! She’s framing me, Elijah! She made Toby say that! She’s trying to destroy us because you dumped her for me!"
"The bottle bears your personal prescription label for cosmetic peptide drops from an private clinic in Beverly Hills, Cassandra," Naomi said smoothly, stepping closer. "The liquid inside was replaced with high-potency XX-904. The mass spectrometry analysis has been electronically timestamped, encrypted, and uploaded directly to the Federal Drug Administration’s emergency criminal portal."

"You... you did WHAT?!" Cassandra shrieked, her voice echoing through the glass walls.
"I am a physician, Cassandra," Naomi said, her eyes burning with pure, unyielding authority. "My duty is to protect my patient. Even if his father was stupid enough to throw away his real life for a murderer."
