Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

At 4:30 AM, the hospital’s executive boardroom on the top floor was illuminated by the dull, gray light of the breaking dawn.
Elijah sat at the head of the conference table, his hands clasped tightly together, staring at a stack of bank records that Naomi’s private legal investigator had delivered thirty minutes earlier.
Beside him stood Arthur Pendelton, the hospital's chief legal counsel, along with Detective Miller from the Major Crimes Division.
For six months, Elijah had lived under a lie.
Six months ago, a series of financial documents had been leaked to the press, showing that Naomi had transferred twelve million dollars out of Sherman Global’s charitable foundation into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under her maiden name. On the same day, photos had been published showing Naomi meeting secretly with Elijah’s chief corporate rival in a hotel restaurant.
Elijah, blinded by pride, corporate paranoia, and the whisperings of Cassandra—who was then his senior PR director—had believed the evidence. He had summoned reporters to their private estate, publicly denounced Naomi as a penniless gold digger who had married him for his status, and signed emergency divorce papers on national television.
He had watched Naomi walk away in the rain, carrying a single suitcase, without giving her a single dollar of alimony.
Now, sitting in the quiet boardroom, Elijah read the forensic financial report prepared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The offshore accounts in the Caymans had never belonged to Naomi. They were shell entities registered under Cassandra Kelley’s mother's maiden name. The hotel meeting photos had been digitally altered by a hired media firm—a firm paid directly from Cassandra’s corporate expense account.
Cassandra hadn't just tried to poison Toby.
She had systematically executed a multi-year corporate takeover, framing Naomi to remove her from Elijah’s life, securing her position as his future wife, and positioning herself to inherit controlling voting shares in Sherman Global Holdings through Toby’s estate.
"Mr. Sherman," Detective Miller said, placing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs on the mahogany table. "We have sufficient evidence to arrest Ms. Kelley for attempted first-degree murder, felony child endangerment, corporate fraud, and evidence tampering. The FDA enforcement division is currently raiding her private residence in the city."
Elijah didn't speak. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a path through the dirt on his cheek and dropping onto the paper bearing Naomi’s forged signature.
"I destroyed her," Elijah whispered, his voice cracking into a raw, guttural sound of pure self-hatred. "She begged me to listen. She swore on her life she didn't do it. And I threw her into the street..."
The boardroom door opened softly.
Naomi walked in, carrying a fresh cup of coffee. She had changed into clean green scrubs, her dark hair tied back in a neat bun. She looked tired, but her eyes were bright, clear, and completely composed.
Detective Miller stood up, nodding respectfully to Naomi. "Dr. Wheeler. We are moving to apprehend Ms. Kelley in the waiting area."
"Thank you, Detective," Naomi said calmly. "Make sure the transport team uses the service elevator. I don't want commotion near the pediatric ward."
"Understood." Miller picked up the handcuffs and walked out of the room, leaving Naomi alone with Elijah.
Silence hung in the large room.
Elijah slowly stood up from the table. He took three steps toward Naomi, then stopped, dropping to his knees on the carpet right in front of her.
The billionaire whose name graced skyscrapers, whose fortune influenced global markets, was groveling on the floor of a hospital conference room.
"Naomi..." Elijah wept, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry. I was blind. I was a fool. I let her trick me. I ruined your name. I ruined your life. Please... God help me, Naomi, please forgive me..."
Naomi looked down at her ex-husband.
She didn't feel rage. She didn't feel triumph. She simply felt the profound, quiet sadness of a woman who had already mourned the loss of a love long ago.
"Get up, Elijah," Naomi said softly.
Elijah looked up, his eyes bloodshot and swollen with tears. "Naomi... I’ll fix this. I’ll hold a national press conference today. I’ll tell the world the truth. I’ll transfer fifty percent of Sherman Global to your name. I’ll give you everything..."
"I don't want your money, Elijah," Naomi interrupted, her voice steady and absolute. "I didn't want it six months ago, and I don't want it now."
She set her coffee cup on the table and looked him straight in the eye.
"You didn't destroy me six months ago," she continued. "You just showed me who you really were. You believed a lie because your pride was too fragile to trust the woman who loved you. Money didn't save Toby tonight, Elijah. Medicine did. Truth did."

Elijah choked on his breath, unable to speak.
"Now get off your knees," Naomi commanded gently. "Your son is awake. And he needs his father."
