Chapter 5 - The Blood on the Docks

The rain had stopped by 1:00 PM, leaving the gray skies hanging heavy over the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Pier 42 was a sprawling, derelict expanse of rusted shipping containers, cracked asphalt, and murky river water. Cold wind swept off the East River, whistling through the empty iron frames of old cranes.
Five black Moretti SUVs glided onto the pier, their tires crunching over loose gravel, stopping thirty yards from a line of heavy armored sedans belonging to the Falcone family.
Alessandro stepped out of his vehicle. He wore a dark wool coat, his hands gloved, his face a mask of absolute, unreadable stone. Behind him stood Marco and ten of his elite enforcers, all armed, their eyes scanning the surrounding shipping containers for snipers.
Across the open asphalt stood Victor Falcone.
He was a man in his late sixties, heavy-set, with thin silver hair slicked back and dark, scheming eyes that had survived three decades of mafia bloodshed. He was flanked by twelve heavily armed men, including his chief enforcer, a hulking brute named Boris.
"Alessandro," Victor called out, his voice raspy and loud against the wind. He smiled, showing a row of tobacco-stained teeth. "You look tired, boy. Late night in Brooklyn?"
Alessandro walked forward, stopping ten paces from Victor. "You requested a meeting, Victor. State your business so I can return to my work."
Victor chuckled, a dark, mocking sound. "Straight to the point. I like that. Let’s talk about Apartment 3B on 4th Street."
Alessandro didn't flinch. "What about it?"
"My boys have been watching that building for two weeks," Victor said, taking a slow step forward. "An old woman named Martha Vance lived there. She was the mother of Elena Vance—that pretty little thing you used to keep hidden away four years ago."
Marco’s hand twitched near his belt. Alessandro remained completely motionless, his expression carved from granite.
"I thought Elena died four years ago," Victor continued, his dark eyes watching Alessandro’s face for any sign of weakness. "But last night, you personally pulled her mother out of that rundown building and put her under twenty-four-hour guard in your private tower. That makes me curious, Alessandro. Why would the great Mafia Boss of Manhattan care about a dying old woman?"
"Her health is my business," Alessandro said calmly. "Not yours."
"Is it?" Victor’s smile vanished, replaced by a cruel, predatory glint. "Or did Elena leave something behind before she died? Something... valuable?"
The wind off the river seemed to drop to a dead whisper.
Alessandro took one slow step forward. His terrifying gray-blue eyes locked onto Victor’s face with an intensity that made the older man’s smile falter for a fraction of a second.
"You have five seconds to walk off this pier, Victor," Alessandro said softly.
"Don't threaten me, boy!" Victor snarled, his patience snapping. "I have twenty men positioned around this pier! You gave up your leverage when you stepped out of Manhattan! Give me the old woman and whatever secrets Elena left her, or I will tear Brooklyn apart until I find what you're hiding!"
Alessandro looked at Victor. He looked at the armed men surrounding him. He looked at the grey sky above.
"You made a mistake, Victor," Alessandro said quietly.
"What mistake?" Victor spat.
"You assumed I came here to negotiate," Alessandro whispered.
Before Victor could comprehend the words, Alessandro’s hand moved with blind, terrifying speed.
A silenced custom pistol appeared in Alessandro’s grip.
THWIP.
A single bullet struck Victor Falcone squarely between the eyes before he could even raise his hands. The heavy mob boss collapsed onto the wet asphalt like a sack of stones, his eyes wide open, dead before he hit the ground.
"FIRE!" Boris screamed, reaching for his weapon—
THWIP. THWIP.
Marco and the Moretti enforcers opened fire in flawless, military unison.
The docks erupted into a short, brutal storm of gunfire. Trapped in the open without their leader, Victor's men were cut down in seconds. The snipers Victor had posted on the shipping containers were instantly picked off by Alessandro’s hidden marksmen stationed high above on the crane towers.
In less than forty-five seconds, the violence was over.
The silence returned to Pier 42, broken only by the lap of the river against the rusted pilings and the smell of gunpowder rising in the cold air.
Alessandro stood in the center of the carnage. His coat was untouched. His expression hadn't changed. He lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back into place, and handed it to Marco.
"Clean this up," Alessandro ordered, his voice flat and unhurried. "Take control of the Falcone docks by sunset. Anyone who resists receives the same answer Victor did."

"Yes, Boss," Marco breathed, staring at the body of the man who had ruled Brooklyn for thirty years, now lying lifeless at Alessandro’s feet. "And the Falcone lieutenants?"
"Tell them the war is over," Alessandro said, turning back toward his Maybach. "And tell them if anyone ever utters the name Vance in this city again... I will erase their entire family line from history."
