Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gate

The sun rose over Manhattan in a cold haze of gold and grey.
Downstairs in the private medical suite, Martha had finally regained full consciousness.
When Alessandro entered the room at 9:00 AM, dressed in a sharp black suit without a tie, the old woman was sitting up in bed, an IV line in her arm, staring out the vast window at the skyline of New York.
She looked small in the high-tech hospital bed, but her eyes, when she turned to face Alessandro, held the fierce, stubborn strength of a woman who had survived the worst life could throw at her.
"Where is she?" Martha asked immediately, her voice still rough from the oxygen mask.
"She is sleeping," Alessandro said, standing near the foot of the bed. "My personal nanny is waiting outside her room with food and clothes. She is completely safe."
Martha released a long, trembling breath, her shoulders sagging against the pillows. "You brought us to your fortress."
"I brought you to the only place in this city where you cannot be touched," Alessandro corrected gently.
Martha looked at him for a long moment. "Elena was terrified of you, Alessandro."
The words cut deep, but Alessandro didn't flinch. He deserved the cut. "I know."
"She loved you so much it destroyed her," Martha continued, her voice quiet and heavy with memories. "When she found out she was pregnant, you were in the middle of that bloody war with the Russians. Men were dying on your doorstep every night. She knew that if your enemies found out she was carrying your child, they would use the baby to destroy you—or kill the baby to hurt you."
Alessandro’s hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"She ran away to protect Annie," Martha said, tears welling in her old eyes. "We moved three times in three years. We lived in small apartments, took cash jobs, kept our heads down. She wouldn't even let me take Annie to a public park out of fear that someone would recognize those eyes of yours."
"How did she die?" Alessandro asked, the question burning in his throat like acid.
"Cancer," Martha whispered. "Aggressive. Swift. By the time we found it, it was already stage four. She suffered for six months in a charity hospice. Before she passed... she gave Annie that necklace. She told her that if anything ever happened to me, if Annie was ever completely alone... she should find a way to get that silver bird to you."
A single tear slipped down Martha's weathered cheek. "She said you were a terrible man, Alessandro... but that you would burn the world before you let anyone hurt your own blood."
Alessandro closed his eyes. The pain inside him was an infinite expanse of dark glass. Elena had suffered alone in a charity hospital while he sat in his penthouse, drinking expensive whiskey and believing she was already dead.
"I will never forgive myself for not finding her," Alessandro said, his voice flat with absolute grief. "But I will spend the rest of my life ensuring that Anastasia has everything Elena wanted for her."
"She calls herself Annie," Martha said softly. "She doesn't know who you are."
"She will," Alessandro said. "In time."
The door to the medical suite slammed open suddenly.
Marco walked in without knocking, his face grim, his phone held tight in his hand. He looked at Martha, then at Alessandro, signaling with a slight nod that they needed to speak outside immediately.
Alessandro stepped out into the hallway, the heavy sound-proof door clicking shut behind him.
"What is it?" Alessandro demanded.
"It’s Victor Falcone," Marco said, his voice dropping into a tense whisper. "He just sent a messenger to our front desk downstairs. He wants a sit-down at 1:00 PM at the neutral ground on the docks."
"Why?"
"He claims one of his lieutenants traced a phone call from that Brooklyn apartment last night," Marco said, his jaw tight. "He knows an old woman was taken from that building by your personal security team. Victor thinks she's a witness to an old money-laundering scheme from five years ago. He’s demanding you hand her over for 'questioning'—or he’ll declare open war on all Moretti territory in Brooklyn."
Alessandro’s eyes went dark, terrifying, and utterly hollow.
Victor Falcone didn't know Annie existed yet. He thought Martha was just a low-level mob asset. But if Victor pushed, if he investigated further, if he looked into who lived in apartment 3B... he would discover the child.
"A sit-down," Alessandro repeated softly.
"It’s a trap, Boss," Marco warned. "Victor is testing you. He wants to see how far you'll go to protect an old woman. If you refuse the sit-down, he’ll know she’s vital to you."
Alessandro leaned back against the wall, his gray-blue eyes staring cold and hard into the distance.
"Tell Victor I accept," Alessandro said smoothly.

Marco blinked, stunned. "Boss, you can't go to the docks! If he suspects—"
"I will go to the docks," Alessandro cut him off, his voice dropping into an icy register that sent chills down Marco’s spine. "And I will end Victor Falcone today. Before he ever hears the name Anastasia."
