Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse at the top of the Moretti Tower in Manhattan was ablaze with light.

It was a fortress built in the sky. The top three floors of the seventy-story glass tower were reinforced with three-inch ballistic glass, private elevator shafts with biometric scanners, and a security force that could hold off an army.

For ten years, Alessandro had lived here alone. It was a space designed for cold efficiency—dark marble, minimalist leather furniture, and sweeping views of the lit city below. It had never contained a toy, a colorful blanket, or the sound of a child’s footsteps.

Now, the grand living room was transformed.

Dr. Vance’s team had successfully stabilized Annie's grandmother, whose name was Martha. She was currently resting in a private, high-tech medical suite on the lower level of the penthouse, surrounded by top cardiologists and round-the-clock nurses.

In the master bedroom, Annie sat on the edge of an enormous king-sized bed. She was dressed in an oversized white cotton t-shirt that belonged to Alessandro, her damp curls brushed out and drying under the warm air of the room. A tray of warm milk, fresh fruit, and soft toast sat untouched on the nightstand beside her.

Alessandro stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the rain strike the glass seventy stories above the street.

In the reflection of the glass, he watched his daughter.

His daughter.

The phrase still felt surreal, like a secret language he had never learned to speak. For thirty-five years, Alessandro had defined himself by what he could destroy, what he could control, and what he could acquire. He was the sovereign of an empire built on fear and loyalty.

And yet, looking at this tiny girl sitting on his bed, he felt entirely helpless.

Marco tapped quietly on the open bedroom door. "Boss."

Alessandro turned around slowly. "Is Martha stable?"

"Yes," Marco nodded. "Vance says her heart rhythm has normalized. The combination of cold, physical exertion, and delayed medication nearly killed her, but she’ll recover. She’s sleeping now."

Alessandro let out a quiet, slow breath. "And the building in Brooklyn?"

"Cleared out," Marco replied, his voice dropping into a low murmur so Annie wouldn't hear. "We erased the apartment. Landlord was paid off, security tapes wiped, and all of Elena’s personal belongings have been packed into crates and brought here. Nobody knows she was there."

Alessandro nodded once. "Good."

"Boss..." Marco hesitated, stepping further into the room. "We have a problem."

Alessandro’s eyes sharpened instantly. "Speak."

"The Falcone family had a scout on that block in Brooklyn tonight," Marco whispered. "He saw your Maybach. He didn't see the kid, but he saw us pull an old woman out of 3B and take her away under heavy guard. Victor Falcone is already calling meetings. He thinks you found a high-value asset or a secret safehouse."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened until the muscles bound like steel wires.

Victor Falcone was the head of the rival family that controlled the Brooklyn docks. He was a ruthless, sadistic old man who had been looking for a weakness in Alessandro's armor for a decade. If Victor discovered that the old woman was Elena Vance’s mother—and that Alessandro had an heir—he would mobilize every hitman on the East Coast to tear Annie away from him.

"Let him wonder," Alessandro said softly. His voice carried a cold, terrible weight. "Double the guard on the perimeter of this building. Nobody enters this floor without my personal biometric clearance. If Victor Falcone so much as breathes toward this tower, I want his head on a spike."

"Understood," Marco said, bowing his head slightly. "And... the girl?"

Alessandro looked over his shoulder at Annie. She had leaned over onto the soft pillows, her small eyes fluttering shut, exhausted by the trauma of the night. Her tiny hand was still wrapped around the silver songbird necklace resting on her chest.

"She stays with me," Alessandro said.

Marco looked at his boss—the man he had seen execute traitors without blinking an eye—and saw a fierce, terrifying protectiveness in his posture that he had never seen before.

"Yes, Boss," Marco said softly, and stepped out, pulling the heavy mahogany door shut behind him.

Alessandro walked quietly across the carpeted floor. He stood beside the bed, looking down at Annie.

Her dark curls were spread across the white silk pillowcase. In sleep, her face lost that guarded, careful calm she had worn outside the pharmacy. She looked tiny, fragile, and utterly innocent—a delicate flower planted in the middle of a battlefield.

Alessandro sat down gently on the edge of the mattress.

Slowly, carefully, he reached out and tucked the dark curls behind her ear.

Annie stirred slightly in her sleep. Her small hand reached out blindly across the bed, searching for something in the dark.

Alessandro held out his broad hand.

Annie’s tiny fingers brushed against his palm, and then, with a quiet sigh, her hand closed tightly around his index finger. She didn't let go.

Alessandro sat in the dark, his finger held tight in his daughter's tiny grip, and felt something cold and frozen deep inside his chest crack wide open.

"I missed your first three years," he whispered into the quiet room, his voice raspy with unspoken tears. "I missed your first steps. I missed your first words. But I swear to you, Anastasia... no one will ever make you feel cold again."
