Chapter 5 - Rebuilding from the Wreckage

Six months later, the spring sun warmed the Atlantic City boardwalk, melting away the bitter memories of the winter war.
The Velvet Room had been completely remodeled, its dark, secretive corners replaced with bright glass windows overlooking the ocean. The criminal element that had once choked the city’s underbelly had been systematically purged. With Petrov in federal prison and the corrupt police precinct dismantled, Luca had transitioned the vast majority of his family’s assets into legitimate real estate, shipping, and community development.
Claire stood on the balcony of a beautiful house in Ventnor, the ocean breeze catching her hair. Her stomach was now prominently round, her due date only a month away.
She looked down at her wrists. The bruises were long gone, replaced by a delicate diamond bracelet that Luca had given her for her twenty-seventh birthday. But the real healing wasn't physical; it was the fact that she no longer jumped when a door slammed. She no longer checked the locks five times before going to sleep.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind. Luca rested his chin on her shoulder, his hands joining hers over the swell of her belly.
"You're thinking too loud," he murmured, his voice warm.
"Just thinking about how much can change in half a year," Claire said, turning around in his embrace to face him. "Six months ago, I was planning my escape to Pittsburgh with two hundred dollars sewn into a tin."
"And now you're stuck with me," Luca smiled, the harshness that once defined his features completely softened in her presence. "The hospital board approved the grant today. The Rose Bennett Memorial Nursing Wing will break ground next month."
Claire’s eyes filled with tears, and she kissed him deeply. "Thank you. For everything."
"You saved me as much as I saved you, Claire," Luca said softly. "I was running an empire built on fear. You gave me a reason to build something that lasts."
Their peace was interrupted by the sound of a throat clearing. Marco stood at the balcony door, wearing a surprisingly well-fitting gray suit and holding a massive bouquet of white lilies.
"Sorry to interrupt, Boss, Claire," Marco said, looking slightly sheepish. "But the lawyers called. The final paperwork for the Mercer asset seizure went through. The state officially transferred his remaining properties to Claire’s foundation."
"Excellent," Luca nodded. "And what about the man himself?"
May you like
Marco smiled grimly. "Grant Mercer’s appeal was denied this morning. He’s serving twenty-five years at ADX Florence. He won't be seeing the sun for a very long time."
Claire felt a final, lingering knot of anxiety dissolve inside her. The nightmare was officially over.
