Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class glided through the rain-slicked streets of Atlantic City like a phantom. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet, broken only by the rhythmic click of the windshield wipers. Claire lay across the leather backseat, her head resting on a plush jacket that smelled of cedar and rain. Every bump in the road sent a jolt of panic through her chest, her hand remaining pressed firmly against her stomach.
Luca Moretti sat in the front passenger seat, his silhouette dark against the flashing neon signs of the boardwalk. He hadn’t spoken a word since his men had carried her out of Apartment 4B.
"Boss," the driver, a thick-necked man named Marco, muttered quietly. "Draper’s already calling. He found Mercer."
"Let him ring," Luca replied, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that brooked no argument. "Draper belongs to the city until I decide otherwise. Right now, our only priority is the clinic."
Claire closed her eyes, fighting the wave of nausea that threatened to overwhelm her. The memory of Grant’s belt hitting the mirror echoed in her ears. That isn't my baby. The words cut deeper than any physical blow. She knew the truth, even if Grant didn't. The night on the yacht—the night Luca had bought her freedom only to treat her with a reverence she hadn't experienced in years—was the only night that mattered.
The car pulled into the underground garage of a private medical facility on the outskirts of Brigantine. Within minutes, Claire was whisked away into a pristine, white examination room. The stark contrast between the filthy, blood-stained floor of her apartment and this sterile sanctuary made her weep silently.
Dr. Elena Vance, a sharp-eyed woman with a gentle touch, examined Claire’s bruises with practiced efficiency. She ran an ultrasound scanner over Claire’s abdomen, the rhythmic thump-thump-thump of a tiny heartbeat suddenly filling the room.
Claire’s breath hitched. "Is... is it okay?"
"The fetus is resilient, Claire," Dr. Vance said, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "You have some severe bruising and cracked ribs, but the baby is safe. You got out just in time."
A shadow crossed the doorway. Luca stood there, his hands buried in his pockets, his gray eyes fixed on the ultrasound monitor. For a fraction of a second, the hardened criminal enterprise leader looked human. Vulnerable, even.
"She stays here tonight," Luca commanded smoothly, stepping into the room as the doctor left. "Guards are at both exits. No one enters this floor without my personal clearance."
Claire pulled the hospital blanket up to her chin, her eyes wide with lingering distrust. "Why are you doing this, Mr. Moretti? The last time... you paid three hundred thousand dollars just to let me walk back into my own nightmare. Why interfere now?"
Luca walked over to the bedside, his presence towering but entirely devoid of the suffocating malice Grant possessed. He looked down at her, the scar on his temple catching the harsh fluorescent light.
"The first time, I bought your freedom because I don't tolerate human trafficking in my city, Claire. I thought you would take the money I left in your bag and run. I didn't know Mercer had your legal documents locked in a safe deposit box. I didn't know he had the police department in his pocket." He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "But today, I saw what he did to you. And more importantly, I know whose child you are carrying."
Claire’s heart stopped. "You know?"
"I don't need a test to recognize my own blood," Luca said softly. "Grant Mercer thinks he’s a player in this city. He’s about to find out what happens when you steal from a Moretti."

Before Claire could respond, the heavy wooden door to the corridor burst open. Marco stood there, his face pale, his hand hovering near his concealed holster.
"Boss, we have a problem," Marco said, his voice tense. "Mercer isn't running. He just walked into the First Precinct with Detective Draper. He’s filing kidnapping charges against you. And he brought a camera crew from the local news."
