Chapter 2 - The Puppet Master’s Play

The media storm erupted before dawn. By 6:00 AM, every television screen in New Jersey featured Grant Mercer standing on the steps of the police station, a perfectly tailored suit masking the terror Luca had inflicted on him the previous day. He held up a framed wedding photograph, his eyes glistening with well-rehearsed tears.

"My wife, Claire, was abducted from our home by organized crime figures," Grant announced to the cluster of microphones. "She is pregnant, vulnerable, and being held against her will. I am begging Luca Moretti to return my family."

Inside a secure safehouse in Ventnor, Claire watched the broadcast with a hollow feeling in her chest. Grant was a master manipulator. In the eyes of the public, he wasn't a monster; he was a grieving husband fighting against the mafia.

"He's good," Luca remarked, switching off the television with a sharp click of the remote. He was sitting at a mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of financial ledgers. "He knows I can’t just eliminate him while the cameras are rolling. It would confirm every accusation."

"He wants the baby," Claire whispered, her voice trembling. "Not because he wants to be a father, but because he knows it’s his ultimate leverage against you. If he proves the child is yours, or if he forces me back, he can blackmail you for the rest of his life."

Luca stood up, walking over to the window that looked out over the gray, churning Atlantic Ocean. "He’s underestimating the stakes. He thinks this is a game of leverage. To me, it’s a matter of survival."

He turned back to Claire, his expression grim. "We need to break his web before he can tighten it. Grant isn't working alone. A small-time gambler doesn't get this much media coverage overnight. Someone is financing him. Someone who wants the Moretti family brought down."

"Who?"

"Viktor Petrov," Luca stated coldly. "The Russian syndicate operating out of the north side. They’ve been trying to seize control of the marina docks for two years. Grant’s gambling debts didn't just disappear; Petrov bought them. Grant is a puppet, Claire."

Just then, Luca’s encrypted phone buzzed. He answered it, listening silently for several long moments before hanging up. His jaw tightened.

"What is it?" Claire asked, panic rising again.

"Detective Draper just signed a search warrant for three of my properties, including the medical facility you were at last night," Luca said, grabbing his coat. "They are looking for you. If they find you, Draper will return you to Grant under the guise of protective custody. Once you’re back in that apartment, Petrov’s men will make sure you disappear forever."

"Where do we go?"

Luca looked at her, a fierce, protective light burning in his eyes. "We don't hide anymore, Claire. We go on the offensive. But I need you to trust me blindly for the next twenty-four hours. Can you do that?"

Claire looked at her hands, then down at her stomach. For two years, she had survived by being invisible, by taking the hits and staying silent. But now, she wasn't just fighting for herself.

"Tell me what to do," she said firmly.
