Chapter 6 - A Home for Tomorrow

The judge slammed her gavel down to quiet the courtroom.
"In light of Miss Sarah Vance’s presence, her explicit testimony on the record, and the incontrovertible evidence of her written intent," Judge Gomez ruled, her voice firm, "this court grants full legal and medical power of attorney over Sarah Vance to Rebecca Thompson. Emergency temporary custody of Emma and Lily Riley is granted jointly to Rebecca and Daniel Thompson, in accordance with the mother's wishes."
Julian stood paralyzed at his table as his attorneys rushed to quietly advise him against appealing. The public backlash of fighting his recovered sister in open court would destroy Vance Global's stock value overnight. With a bitter glare toward the family, Julian turned and swept out of the courtroom through a side exit.
Emma didn't care about Julian. She broke away from the table and ran down the center aisle, throwing her arms gently around her mother’s shoulders.
"Mom," Emma cried, her tears finally falling freely. "You came back."
"I promised you I would, sweetie," Sarah whispered, resting her head against Emma's. She looked up as Rebecca and Daniel approached, carrying baby Lily.
Tears streamed down Rebecca’s face as she reached out, taking her sister's hands for the first time in ten years. "Welcome home, Sarah."
"Thank you, Rebecca," Sarah murmured softly. "Thank you for finding them."
"Daniel found them," Rebecca smiled, looking at her husband. "He found them in the storm."
Six months later, the spring sun shone bright and warm over the back garden of the Thompson brownstone.
Sarah, now fully recovered and regaining her strength, sat in a garden chair, watching her daughters. Eleven-year-old Emma was running across the green lawn, pulling a colorful kite behind her, while baby Lily, now sitting up and laughing, clapped her tiny hands from a blanket on the grass.
Daniel and Rebecca stood on the patio, holding mugs of coffee, watching the family laugh together.
Emma ran up the patio steps, out of breath, her cheeks rosy with health and happiness. She reached into her shirt and pulled out the silver vine-and-sapphire locket, which now hung alongside a small key—a key to her new bedroom upstairs.
"Are you happy, Emma?" Daniel asked with a warm smile.
Emma looked at her mother, her sister, and the aunt and uncle who had opened their hearts and home to them when they had nowhere left to go.

"I kept my promise to Mom," Emma said softly, her blue eyes shining with quiet joy. "And you kept your promise to me."
She hugged Daniel around the waist, then turned and ran back into the warm sunshine to play with her sister, leaving the storm behind them forever.
