Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Past

The kitchen grew deathly silent. Daniel and Rebecca shared a look of profound shock, a quiet communication refined over twenty years of marriage.

"Emma," Daniel spoke, his voice trembling with an emotion Emma couldn't quite read. "Your mother's name is Sarah. Sarah... Vance?"

"Sarah Riley," Emma corrected quickly, her knuckles white as she clutched the silver locket. "Her name is Sarah Riley."

Rebecca wiped a tear from her cheek and walked over to a small wooden desk near the dining table. She opened a locked drawer, pulled out a velvet-lined jewelry box, and brought it to the island. With trembling fingers, she lifted the lid.

Inside lay a matching silver ring—crafted in the exact same vine-and-sapphire pattern as Emma’s locket.

"Your mother lied about her last name to protect herself," Rebecca whispered softly. "And to protect you. My name is Rebecca Vance Thompson. Sarah... Sarah is my younger sister."

Emma’s breath hitched. "My... my aunt?"

"Your mother disappeared ten years ago, Emma," Daniel explained, sitting down beside his wife. "Her father—Rebecca's father—was a powerful, controlling man. When Sarah fell in love with a man he disapproved of, he tried to force them apart. When Sarah discovered she was pregnant with you, she ran away to protect you from his influence. We searched for her for years, but she completely erased her trail."

Emma sat frozen as the pieces of her life began to rearrange themselves. Her mother had always talked about a past she couldn't return to, about family members who were dangerous not out of hatred, but out of power and control.

"Is... is your father still looking for her?" Emma asked quietly.

Rebecca’s face hardened. "Arthur Vance passed away three years ago. But his corporation—Vance Global—is now run by my brother, Julian. And Julian inherited all of our father's worst traits. If Julian finds out Sarah is alive and back in Chicago, he will try to claim control over her life... and yours."

Before Emma could respond, a sharp knock echoed from the front door.

Daniel glanced at the security monitor on the wall. His expression turned grim. Standing on the porch, flanked by two men in dark suits, was a tall man in a tailored charcoal coat.

"It’s Julian," Daniel said quietly. "He followed my car from the hospital."
