Chapter 4 - Race Against Time

The next morning broke clear and brittle. Inside the Thompson residence, the calm of the previous night had transformed into a command center.

Daniel sat at the kitchen table with three laptops open, conferring with a team of top family lawyers and medical specialists. Across the room, Rebecca was on the phone with the chief of medicine at Northwestern Memorial.

"We need Sarah transferred here to Children's Memorial ICU under alias protection immediately," Rebecca urged into the receiver. "Julian is already trying to pull strings to take over her medical power of attorney."

Emma sat on the rug in the living room, gently shaking a wooden rattle for Lily. Though she was only ten, she understood the stakes. Her uncle Julian was a powerful man, and if he took custody of them, she and Lily would become pawns in a corporate war.

"Emma," Daniel called softly, walking into the living room and sitting on the sofa near her. "I need you to listen to me carefully."

Emma looked up, holding Lily close. "Are they going to take us?"

"No," Daniel said firmly. "I promised you last night that I wouldn't let anyone separate you two, and I intend to keep that promise. But to stop Julian, we need to prove that your mother wanted Rebecca and me to care for you if anything happened to her."

Emma remembered something. She set Lily down on the play mat and ran to her backpack in the hallway. She reached into the front pocket and pulled out a worn, blue leather notebook.

"Mom wrote in this every week," Emma said, handing it to Daniel. "She said it was a diary for when we grew up."

Daniel carefully opened the journal. On the very first page, written in Sarah's neat handwriting, was a letter dated three years prior:

If anything ever happens to me, and I cannot speak for my daughters Emma and Lily, I place them entirely in the care of my sister, Rebecca Vance Thompson. She is the only one who knows the truth of our family, and the only one I trust to give my children a life of love, free from the shadow of my father and brother.

Daniel looked up, a bright wave of hope lighting his eyes. "Emma... this is a legal holographic declaration of intent. This changes everything."
