Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Club

Three days later. The Grand Piedmont Country Club in Charlotte.

It was a bright, sunny Thursday afternoon. The country club’s terrace was filled with Charlotte’s elite—wealthy socialites, corporate executives, and local politicians enjoying lunch over glasses of chilled white wine.

Celeste sat at a prime corner table overlooking the golf course, wearing a high-end cream designer dress, oversized sunglasses, and her six-carat diamond wedding ring. Sitting across from her was her mother, Victoria Monroe, and two prominent socialite friends.

Celeste was laughing, sipping her mimosa, acting as if nothing had happened. She was convinced Grant would eventually calm down, realize how much he needed her to manage his life, and call her to negotiate a quiet reconciliation to avoid a public scandal.

"Honestly, Victoria," Celeste sneered, adjusting her ring under the sunlight, "Grant is completely overreacting. He had a stressful trip, saw a little normal household discipline, and threw a tantrum. He'll be begging me to come back by Friday. He can't run that house without me for three days."

"Of course he can't, dear," Victoria agreed, patting her daughter's hand. "Men like Grant Mercer are built for business, not domestic life. He needs you."

Suddenly, the hushed murmur of the terrace went dead silent.

A fleet of three black SUVs pulled up to the club's valet entrance. The heavy doors opened, and Grant Mercer stepped out, looking imposing in a sharp, dark charcoal suit.

Walking beside him was Arthur Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and a representative from the State Department of Financial Crimes.

Celeste’s laughter died in her throat. Her glass froze halfway to her lips.

Grant walked onto the terrace, his heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoing off the stone tiles as every eye in the country club turned toward him.

"Grant?" Celeste stammered, standing up quickly, her face pale behind her sunglasses. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why did you bring police to my club?"

Grant stopped four feet from her table. He didn't look angry; he looked entirely detached, like a judge preparing to read a final sentence.

"You left a few things at the house, Celeste," Grant said smoothly.

Arthur Vance stepped forward, opening his briefcase and laying a thick stack of legal documents directly onto Celeste’s lunch plate, splashing her mimosa across the linen tablecloth.

"Celeste Monroe-Mercer," Arthur declared loudly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent terrace. "You are hereby served with an emergency restraining order, a petition for marriage annulment based on fraud, and a grand jury subpoena regarding four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in illegal wire transfers to Monroe Management LLC in the Cayman Islands."

The terrace gasped collectively. Celeste’s socialite friends pulled their chairs back in horror, staring at her as if she were a toxic hazard.

"That's... that's a lie!" Celeste shrieked, her voice cracking as she turned to her mother for support. "Grant, you're framing me! You can't do this!"

"I don't need to frame you, Celeste," Grant said softly, stepping closer, leaning in so only she could hear his next words. "I watched the video files from the hallway. I saw what you did to Eliza. I saw where you locked her. And so did the District Attorney an hour ago."

Celeste’s eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror. The blood drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and defeated.

The financial crimes officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Celeste Monroe, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and felony child endangerment," the officer said, pulling her hands behind her back. "You have the right to remain silent..."

"Grant! Please!" Celeste screamed as the metal handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists in front of fifty of Charlotte's most prominent residents. "Grant, don't do this to me! Think about our reputation!"

Grant didn't blink. He watched calmly as the officers marched her off the terrace, her designer heels dragging against the stone floor, her mother weeping in silent shame behind her.

Grant turned around, straightened his suit jacket, and walked back to his car, leaving the whispers and shock of the country club behind him forever.
