Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Lie

By 2:00 AM, the house was silent again, but it was a different kind of quiet—the heavy, fragile stillness that follows a violent storm.

Celeste had packed two large suitcases, thrown them into her luxury SUV, and sped out of the driveway without looking back, slamming the wrought-iron gate behind her.

Grant had spent the last three hours in the kitchen. He had warmed a bottle for Owen, sitting on the floor of the living room while the baby drank hungrily, clutching Grant’s pinky finger with his tiny hand. Afterwards, Grant had sat on the edge of Eliza's bed, holding her hand while she finally drifted off into a deep, safe sleep, her breathing evening out for the first time in months.

Once both children were sound asleep, Grant walked down to his private study on the main floor.

He turned on his desk lamp and sat down at his computer. His executive mind, usually reserved for corporate acquisitions and balance sheets, was now dialed into a singular, urgent mission: exposing the woman he had allowed into his home.

He opened the security portal for the house. Six months ago, Celeste had convinced him to update the home security system, claiming the old cameras were outdated. She had handed him the setup documents, which he had signed without reading, trusting her entirely.

Now, Grant bypassed the primary user interface Celeste controlled and accessed the master server logs using his administrator network credentials.

What he found made his stomach turn into knots.

Celeste hadn't disabled the internal cameras in the house—she had simply redirected the cloud feeds to a private, hidden folder accessible only from her personal tablet.

Grant opened the video archives from three weeks ago while he was on a four-day conference in New York.

He clicked play on a file timestamped 2:15 PM on a Tuesday.

On the screen, eight-year-old Eliza was sitting at the kitchen island, trying to finish her math homework. Celeste walked into the frame, grabbed Eliza's notebook, and ripped the page out in front of her. When Eliza began to cry, Celeste grabbed her by the arm, dragged her down the hallway, and locked her inside the dark pantry near the laundry room, shutting off the lights while Eliza banged on the door, screaming for her father.

Grant slammed his hand down onto the mahogany desk, knocking over a brass pen holder.

“God forgive me...” Grant choked out, covering his face with his hands as heavy, silent sobs wracked his body.

He had spent six months reviewing quarterly earnings, attending black-tie galas, and congratulating himself on being a great provider, while his motherless daughter was being terrorized fifty feet from his own bed.

He pulled himself together, wiping his eyes, his sorrow turning back into cold, calculated fury. He downloaded every single video file onto three separate encrypted flash drives.

Then, he opened the primary bank accounts for the Mercer Family Trust.

When Grant looked at the ledger, his eyes narrowed.

Over the last eight months, small, systematic wire transfers—ranging from $8,000 to $15,000 each—had been moved from the house operating account into an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Monroe Management LLC.

The total amounted to over $450,000.

Celeste hadn't just been abusing his children; she was systematically siphoning his wealth, laying the groundwork to drain his personal accounts before filing for a lucrative divorce.

The domestic management, the sweet phone calls, the "fine" household—it had all been a long, calculated scam designed to bleed him dry while isolating his children so they wouldn't speak up.

Grant picked up his phone and dialed his private attorney, Arthur Vance, hitting speakerphone as he leaned back in his chair.

"Grant?" Arthur’s sleepy voice came through the line. "It's two in the morning. Is everything alright?"

"Arthur," Grant said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute register. "I need you to file an emergency petition for full divorce, a temporary restraining order, and freeze all joint accounts effective immediately. And call Deputy Chief Reynolds at Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD. I have video evidence of child abuse and financial fraud."

"My God, Grant... what happened?"

"I woke up, Arthur," Grant whispered, staring at a picture of his children on his desk. "And I'm going to burn her world to the ground."
