Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

Celeste jumped, nearly spilling her tea as she spun around. The color drained from her face in an instant, her eyes widening in absolute, unadulterated shock as she saw her husband standing five feet away.

"Grant!" Celeste stammered, her voice instantly shifting, trying desperately to find its pleasant, gentle pitch. "You... you're home early! Your flight wasn't supposed to land until tomorrow morning—"

"What is this?" Grant’s voice was terrifyingly quiet. It was lower than the tone he used in boardroom takeovers, lower than any voice his family had ever heard from him. It was the sound of a man watching his entire reality burn to ashes.

"Grant, darling, listen to me," Celeste said quickly, stepping toward him with a practiced, reassuring smile, holding up her hands. "It’s not what it looks like. Eliza was having a night terror, and she pulled Owen out of his crib. I was just trying to get her to calm down and put him back—"

"Mommy!"

The word didn't come from Celeste. It came from Eliza.

The eight-year-old girl looked up from the floor, staring at her father as if she were looking at a ghost. Then, seeing the pure, unyielding rage in Grant's eyes directed at Celeste, something inside Eliza snapped—a dam of suppressed fear breaking open after months of solitary suffering.

"Daddy!" Eliza sobbed, scrambling to her feet while holding Owen tight in her arms. She ran straight past Celeste, throwing herself against Grant's legs, weeping so hard her small body shook against his trousers. "Daddy, don't let her take Owen! Please don't let her put him in the dark room!"

Grant immediately dropped to his knees on the hallway floor. He wrapped his arms around both of his children, pulling Eliza and the whimpering baby deep into his chest. He felt how thin Eliza felt beneath her nightgown—how small, how frail, how utterly terrified she was in her own home.

"I've got you, sweetheart," Grant choked out, his eyes stinging with fierce, burning tears as he buried his face in Eliza's soft hair. "I've got you. Daddy's here. Nobody is going to touch you."

Over Eliza's shoulder, Grant looked up at Celeste. His dark eyes were cold, unblinking, and lethal.

"The dark room, Celeste?" Grant asked softly.

Celeste’s posture stiffened, her mask slipping away entirely as she realized she couldn't lie her way out of this. She crossed her arms, her jaw clenching as her expression hardened into cold defiance.

"She's exaggerating, Grant," Celeste sneered, dropping the sweet voice completely. "The girl is dramatic and willful. I put her in the pantry for twenty minutes last week when she talked back to me. It's called boundary setting. You wouldn't know anything about raising these children because you’re never here! You leave me to manage this house, and then you expect them to be perfect little angels when you stroll in on the weekends!"

Grant stood up slowly, holding Owen in one arm while keeping his other hand firmly planted on Eliza's shoulder.

"Pack your bags," Grant said.

Celeste blinked, letting out a sharp, bitter laugh. "Excuse me?"

"Pack your bags, take your personal belongings, and get out of my house," Grant repeated, his voice deadpan and absolute. "Right now."

"You can't throw me out in the middle of the night!" Celeste raised her voice, taking a threatening step forward. "I am your wife! I have rights in this house! I’ve devoted two years of my life to cleaning up the mess your dead wife left behind!"

The air in the hallway went deathly still.

Grant took one step toward her. The sheer power and dangerous intensity radiating from him made Celeste instinctively take two steps back, her foot catching on the runner rug.

"If you mention my late wife again, or if you take more than fifteen minutes to gather your clothes," Grant whispered, his tone terrifyingly calm, "I will call the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and have you removed in handcuffs for child abuse and unlawful restraint. Choose your next move very carefully, Celeste."

Celeste stared at him, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. She saw no hesitation in his eyes. She saw a man who would destroy her without a second thought.

Grumbling an oath under her breath, she spun around, her heels clicking angrily against the floor as she marched into the master bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

Grant turned back to his daughter. He dropped down to his knees again, cupping Eliza's tear-stained face in his large, trembling hands.

"Eliza... look at me, baby," Grant whispered, wiping away a tear with his thumb. "How long has this been happening?"

May you like

Eliza looked into her father's eyes, her small lips trembling. "Since... since you started the big project in Atlanta six months ago," she whispered. "She told us if we told you, you'd get mad and leave us forever."

Grant closed his eyes as a wave of devastating guilt crashed over his heart, shattering his pride into dust.
