Chapter 6 - The Golden Hour

Six months later, the sun was setting over the pier, painting the water in shades of gold and amber.

The city had changed. It was quieter, safer. The fear that had once defined Queens had been replaced by a cautious, growing hope.

I had officially retired from the "life." My properties had been sold, and my assets were tied up in a trust that funded the local school and the hospital where Elena had recovered. I lived in a small house on the edge of the city, not a mansion, not a fortress.

I was sitting on the porch when a small figure came running across the grass.

Elena was running. She had the purple sneakers on, and she was laughing, her voice like wind chimes in the evening air. Behind her, Bruno bounded along, his tail wagging, his heavy paws kicking up grass.

She stopped in front of me, breathless, holding out a drawing—a crayon portrait of a dog and a girl.

"For you, Mr. Boss," she said, grinning.

I looked at the drawing, then at the girl who was the reason I had finally learned how to live. I took the drawing, feeling the warmth of the sun and the peace of the silence.

Tomas walked up behind her, putting a hand on her shoulder. He and I nodded to each other—a silent acknowledgment of the blood, the grief, and the redemption that had bound us together.

Bruno sat down at my feet, his head resting against my knee, his eyes closing as he basked in the fading light.

I looked at my hands. They were the same hands that had held guns and dealt death, but they were empty now, and I had never felt more powerful.

The nightmare was gone. The shadows had receded.

I pulled Elena into a hug, feeling the solid, rhythmic beat of her heart against my chest. It was a simple, beautiful, impossible sound—the sound of a life reclaimed, the sound of a future we had earned.

The Stone Boss was dead. But in his place, a man stood, watching the sun rise on a world that finally, truly, felt like home.
