Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of shadows and steel.

I used Marco’s own network to leak false information to Harlan’s camp. We let them believe that I was reeling, that I was hiding in my estate, paralyzed by guilt and indecision. We fed them lies about a secret shipment coming into Pier 19—a shipment that didn't exist.

My business was built on fear, but this time, it was built on something much stronger: a father’s vengeance.

Tomas Vasquez, once a simple restaurant owner, stood in my war room, his face hardened by the fires of grief and sudden, fierce hope. He had been a soldier in his youth, back in the old country, a fact I hadn't known until he volunteered to lead the frontal assault on Harlan’s warehouse.

"You don't have to do this, Tomas," I said, looking at him.

"She is my blood," he replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "You are the King of Queens. You have the armies. But I am the man who almost buried his daughter. I have nothing left to lose."

Bruno seemed to sense the shift. He followed Tomas everywhere, a dark shadow of loyalty. It was strange—the dog who had never let anyone touch him except me was now tethered to the man whose daughter he had saved.

As night fell over the city, the skyline shimmered like a crown of cold fire. I stood on the balcony of my penthouse, looking down at the streets where I had reigned for a decade. I had spent my life building a wall of stone around my heart, believing that emotion was a weakness, that love was a liability.

Elena’s heartbeat—that tiny, miraculous, stubborn rhythm—had destroyed that wall.

"The men are in position," Tony said, stepping onto the balcony.

"And Harlan?"

"He’s moving. He took the bait. He’s heading for Pier 19 with his entire inner circle. He thinks he’s going to finish us tonight."

I turned, my face illuminated by the distant city lights. "Then let’s show him why they call me the Stone Boss."
