Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

By dawn, the city of Queens was at war.

My safe house was fortified, Elena was in a private ICU wing heavily guarded by my most loyal men, and Marco Ricci was chained to a radiator in the basement, his spirit broken, his secrets bleeding out.

The story he told was a horror show. Victor Harlan hadn't just wanted my territory; he wanted my soul. He had recruited Marco months ago by promising him the throne, but the condition was simple: I had to be broken. They knew that if a child in my territory died because of my "business," the guilt would consume me. They didn't just want me dead; they wanted me to be the reason for my own downfall.

"It was a sedative," Marco whimpered, his eyes swollen from Bruno’s earlier work. "Harlan’s doctor... he promised she wouldn't feel a thing. He said it would look like death for forty-eight hours. Just long enough to make you bury her, and then... and then it would be over."

I paced the cold concrete floor, my fingers tracing the trigger of my sidearm. "And the car? The hit-and-run?"

"That was real," Marco said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "The car was Harlan’s. He wanted to make sure she was 'taken care of' if the drug didn't hold. He’s a monster, Boss. You have no idea what he’s planning for the docks."

I looked at Bruno, who was lying by the door, watching Marco with unblinking eyes. The dog knew. He had felt the heartbeat while everyone else saw a corpse.

"Tony," I said to my lieutenant, who stood in the shadows. "Prepare the men. We’re not taking back the streets. We’re purging them."

The betrayal cut deeper than the bullet wounds I’d sustained in the past. Marco was the man who had held my hand when I thought I was dying after the dockyard ambush three years ago. To realize that he had been selling me out, piece by piece, was a realization that burned the last of my mercy to ash.

"What do you want to do with him?" Tony asked, gesturing toward the radiator.

I looked at Marco, then at the phone in my hand. I had a message to send to Victor Harlan. "Keep him alive. He’s going to be the bait in the biggest trap this city has ever seen."
