Chapter 5 - Unholy Alliance

The next three days were a bizarre blur of luxury, tension, and impending storm.

The East Wing of the Vale estate was transformed into a paradise for the children. Adrian had entire toy stores delivered to the mansion. The expansive gardens were opened for Leo, Lily, and Noah to play under the watchful eyes of five heavily armed guards disguised as groundskeepers.

Watching Adrian try to learn how to be a father was both heartbreaking and mesmerizing.

The terrifying Mafia Don, who could strike fear into the hearts of corrupt politicians, had no idea how to handle a tea party with three-year-old Lily. I stood in the doorway of the playroom on the second afternoon, watching Adrian sitting awkwardly on a tiny plastic chair, drinking imaginary tea from a pink plastic cup while Lily placed a glittering tiara on his neat, dark hair.

"More tea, Daddy?" Lily chirped, her gray eyes shining with innocent delight.

Adrian's breath caught in his throat at the word Daddy. He looked up, catching my gaze from the doorway. His eyes were filled with such profound, raw emotion that it made my heart ache.

"Yes, princess," Adrian managed to say, his voice thick with unexpressed tears. "More tea, please."

In just seventy-two hours, the kids had begun to thaw toward him. Even Leo, who remained hyper-vigilant and defensive, had started asking Adrian questions about the massive library and the tactical maps in the study. Adrian answered every question with infinite patience, treating seven-year-old Leo with the respect of a young prince.

But while the interior of the mansion felt like an impossible dream, the world outside was burning.

On the fourth night, I couldn't sleep. I walked down the dim hallways of the mansion, drawn by the faint light slipping through the crack of Adrian's office door. I heard heated voices inside.

"It's a full alliance, Don Adrian," Frank's voice echoed through the heavy door. "Dominic has joined forces with Senator Vance. Vance is pissed about you kicking Julianne out. He's using his legal authority to authorize a federal raid on our shipping docks tomorrow night, while Dominic's mercenaries move in on the estate under the cover of the chaos."

"They're moving faster than I anticipated," Adrian's voice was dangerously calm. "Vance wants to destroy my reputation, and Dominic wants my head."

"If they strike together, Boss, our security line might hold, but the risk to Miss Maya and the children..." Frank paused. "It's too high."

I pushed the door open, my heart hammering against my chest. Both men turned to look at me. Adrian immediately stood up from his desk, motioning for Frank to leave. Frank bowed his head and quickly exited, closing the heavy oak door behind him.

"You heard," Adrian said, walking around the desk to stand before me.

"They're coming here, aren't they?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "Your past is finally knocking down the door."

"They are coming," Adrian acknowledged, his gray eyes steady, unblinking. "But they are making a fatal mistake, Maya. Four years ago, when Dominic tried to take my family, I fought to protect an empire. I was hesitant. I was careful. Tonight, they are threatening my children and the woman I love. I have nothing left to prove, and no mercy left to give."

He stepped closer, taking my face in his large, warm hands. The contrast between his lethal promises and his tender touch made my breath hitch.

"I spent four years regretting the night I pushed you away," Adrian whispered, his eyes searching mine with a terrifying intensity. "I thought I was saving you, but all I did was break both our hearts. If I survive tomorrow night, Maya... I am done with this world. I will step down. I will burn the Vale empire to the ground and turn it into a charitable trust if that's what it takes to give you a normal life."

"You would give up everything?" I asked, tears welling in my eyes. "The power? The legacy?"

"You are my legacy!" Adrian roared softly, his voice full of passion. "Leo, Lily, Noah... you four are the only legacy I care about! I don't want an empire of blood, Maya. I just want a life with you."

Before I could process his words, Adrian leaned down and pressed his lips against mine.

May you like

The kiss was desperate, fiery, and filled with four years of built-up longing, grief, and unyielding love. It wasn't the tentative touch of strangers; it was the reunion of two souls that had been torn apart by tragedy. My hands instinctively found their way to his chest, clutching his shirt, pulling him closer as I kissed him back with all the emotion I had tried so hard to suppress.

When he finally pulled back, our foreheads resting together, both of us breathing heavily, he whispered against my skin: "Tomorrow, I end this war forever. And then, I come back to you."
