Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The room descended into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Adrian slowly released his hold on my waist, turning his towering frame toward the small boy standing in the hallway. I watched as the ruthless mob boss—a man who had ordered the execution of syndicate leaders without blinking—looked utterly paralyzed by the sight of a seven-year-old boy with a toy bat.

"Leo," I said quickly, stepping in front of Adrian to block his view. "Sweetheart, go back to bed. Everything is fine. This... Mr. Vale was just leaving."

"He was making you cry," Leo said firmly, his eyes shifting around my hip to glare directly at Adrian. "I don't like him."

A sound escaped Adrian's throat—a strangled mix of a gasp and a heartbroken laugh. He slowly sank to one knee, keeping a respectful distance from the young boy.

"You're right to protect your mother, Leo," Adrian said, his voice soft, almost reverence in his tone. "A real man always protects the women in his life. You're doing a brave job."

Leo narrowed his eyes, unimpressed by the compliment. "Who are you? Why were you chasing us in the park?"

Adrian swallowed hard. He looked up at me, silent desperation in his gray eyes, asking for permission. I shook my head slightly, my heart pounding in panic. Don't tell him. Please don't tell him yet.

"I... I used to know your mother a long time ago," Adrian said carefully, turning back to Leo. "I was an old friend. I was just... checking to make sure she and you kids were safe."

"We're fine," Leo said bluntly. "We don't need you. Mommy takes care of us."

The words were sharp, unintended stabs straight into Adrian's heart. He flinched, but he accepted the blow quietly. He stood up slowly, his tall frame once again dominating the tiny living room.

"Go to bed, Leo," I whispered gently. "I'll be in to tuck you in in a minute."

Leo hesitated, glancing suspiciously between Adrian and me, before finally nodding and retreating into the dark bedroom, closing the door behind him.

Once the door clicked shut, I turned to Adrian, my fists clenched at my sides. "You see? They don't need you. They have a quiet, peaceful life. If you force yourself into our lives, you will bring the monsters that follow you straight to their bedroom doors. Is that what you want?"

Adrian’s face hardened, the vulnerability from moments ago evaporating, replaced by the lethal coldness of the Don.

"The monsters are already moving, Maya," he said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly serious register.

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Did you think I walked through Grant Park today without security?" Adrian asked, taking a step toward me. "My men were watching from the perimeter. And so were the eyes of rival factions. When I broke off from my security detail to chase you down the subway, people noticed. My uncle's former loyalists—the ones who still think I'm weak for trying to go legitimate—they saw me drop to my knees in front of your stroller."

A cold dread spread through my veins, freezing the blood in my heart. "No..."

"By tomorrow morning, half the underworld in Chicago will be asking who the woman with the three gray-eyed children is," Adrian continued ruthlessly, his eyes burning into mine. "They don't know the full truth yet, but they are curious. And in my world, curiosity ends in blood. You think this little apartment with three deadbolts is going to keep my enemies out? If they use you or those kids to get to me, you won't survive the week."

"You brought this on us!" I screamed softly, tears of pure terror spilling down my face. "We were safe for four years until you showed up today!"

"And I will fix it!" Adrian asserted, grabbing my arms gently but firmly. "You are coming with me. Tonight. All four of you."

"Are you insane?" I pulled back, thrashing against his grip. "I am not moving my children into the Vale estate! That house is cursed! It's a bloody fortress!"

"It is the only place in this entire state with three-inch thick bulletproof glass, forty armed guards, and an underground bunker system!" Adrian snapped back. "I am not asking for your permission, Maya. I am telling you how my children survive the night. Pack a bag for them. Now."

"And what about your fiancée?" I spat, bitterness twisting my words. "What about Julianne? What is she going to say when you bring your ex-lover and three secret bastard children into your grand mansion?"

Adrian's eyes narrowed, a dark, dangerous spark igniting within them. "Julianne Vance will do exactly as she is told, or her father's political career burns to the ground by midnight. Do not worry about her. You and the children are my only priority."

Before I could argue further, the quiet night air was shattered by the sharp, terrifying sound of a suppressed gunshot.

Pft.

The living room window shattered into a thousand tiny glittering fragments. A high-caliber bullet embedded itself deep into the drywall just inches from my head.

I screamed, dropping to the floor.

In less than a second, Adrian moved with superhuman speed. He tackled me to the ground, covering my body with his own heavy frame, shielding my head with his arms.

Pft. Pft.

Two more bullets tore through the living room, tearing through the couch and shattering a lamp on the side table.

"Mommy!" Leo yelled from the bedroom, followed by the terrified, high-pitched crying of the twins.

"Stay down!" Adrian commanded me, his voice pure steel. He reached behind his back, slipping a sleek, dark semi-automatic pistol from his hidden holster. The calm, terrifying predator had fully awakened.

He pulled a small radio unit from his belt and clicked the button. "Vector-One, this is Alpha. We have a breach at the Pilsen location. Suppressed sniper fire from the rooftop across the street. Execute Contingency Black immediately. Move in!"

"Acknowledged, Boss. Two minutes," a crackling voice replied over the comms.

Adrian looked down at me, his gray eyes blazing with absolute authority and a terrifying possessiveness. "Still think you're safe here, Maya?"

I looked at the shattered glass raining down around us, listening to the screams of my frightened children in the next room, and realized with sickening clarity that my four-year illusion of safety had just been shattered forever.

"Get the kids," I sobbed, clutching Adrian's shirt. "Please, Adrian... save my babies!"

"On my life," Adrian swore softly. He kissed my forehead gently—a quick, burning touch of absolute promise—before sliding across the floor toward the kids' bedroom to secure my world.
