Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

The heavy iron gates of the Vale Estate groaned open, allowing the armored black SUV to roll slowly up the long, winding cobblestone driveway. Towering oak trees framed the path, their branches swaying in the cold midnight wind like dark reaching fingers. High-powered floodlights illuminated the manicured lawns, revealing armed men patrolling the perimeter with assault rifles slung over their tactical vests.
Inside the vehicle, the silence was deafening.
Lily and Noah were asleep, exhausted from fear, curled up on my lap under a thick cashmere blanket Adrian had provided. Leo sat next to me, his jaw set tight, refusing to sleep, his eyes glued to the dark tinted window as we approached the massive, looming stone mansion.
Adrian sat in the front passenger seat, his phone pressed to his ear, issuing cold, precise commands in a low voice.
"Find out who authorized the strike on the Pilsen apartment," Adrian said into the phone, his voice dripping with ice. "I want names by sunrise. If it's Dominic's crew, wipe out their warehouse in Cicero. Leave no survivors."
He hung up, resting his hand against his forehead, looking visibly aged by the night's events.
"You said you were clean," I said quietly from the back seat, my voice trembling with exhaustion and anger. "You told the news you turned the Vale family into a legitimate real estate holding corporation. But you're still ordering hits."
Adrian turned his head, looking back at me through the dim light of the cabin. "I clean up my business so my children can walk in the light one day, Maya. But in order to protect that light, I still have to rule the dark. If I show an ounce of mercy to the people who shot at my children tonight, we won't live to see next week."
The SUV pulled to a smooth stop under the grand stone portico. The driver, a tall, heavily scarred man named Frank whom I recognized from years ago, jumped out and opened my door.
"Welcome back, Miss Maya," Frank said respectfully, bowing his head slightly. "It's good to see you alive."
"Thank you, Frank," I murmured, carefully stepping out while cradling Lily in my arms. Adrian stepped forward and easily gathered Noah into his large arms, handling the sleeping toddler with an unexpected, delicate gentleness that contrasted wildly with his lethal aura.
We entered the grand foyer. The marble floors glistened under the massive crystal chandelier, reflecting the towering oil paintings of previous Vale family patriarchs. Nothing had changed about the physical beauty of the estate, yet everything felt fundamentally different. It felt like stepping back into a gilded cage.
"Take them to the East Wing suite," Adrian instructed the house staff waiting in the hall. "Set up full security protocols. No one enters that wing without my personal voice authorization."
"Adrian!"
A sharp, hysterical voice shattered the stillness of the grand hall.
Walking down the grand sweeping staircase was Julianne Vance. She was still wearing her elegant cocktail dress from earlier in the day, but her hair was disheveled, and her face was flushed with fury. She held a glass of scotch in her manicured hand, her giant diamond ring sparkling under the chandelier light.
"What is the meaning of this?" Julianne demanded, her heels clicking sharply against the marble as she stormed toward us. "You abandoned me at the restaurant! You disappeared for six hours with your security detail! And now you bring this... this common street woman and her bastard children into your home at two in the morning?"
I flinched at her words, instinctively pulling Leo closer to my side.
Adrian didn't even blink. He handed the sleeping Noah to Frank, step-by-step advancing toward Julianne. The air in the foyer instantly plummeted to sub-zero temperatures.
"Watch your mouth, Julianne," Adrian warned, his voice dangerously soft. "You are speaking about the mother of my children."
Julianne gasped, nearly dropping her glass. She looked from Adrian to me, then at Leo, then at the sleeping twins. The realization hit her like a violent physical blow. Her eyes widened in absolute horror and embarrassment.
"Children?" Julianne stammered, her voice rising an octave. "You... you have children? With her? Adrian, we are getting married in three months! My father is the Senator! We have a deal!"
"The deal is broken," Adrian said coldly, taking off his watch and tossing it onto a nearby side table. "Take your things and leave. My driver will take you back to your father's penthouse in the morning."
"You can't do this to me!" Julianne screamed, her composure completely shattering. "My father will ruin you! He will pull every state permit! He will send the federal prosecutors after your legitimate companies! You will be broke and in prison!"
Adrian stepped into Julianne's personal space, towering over her with a look of pure, unadulterated menace that made the heiress instantly stumble backward in terror.
"Tell your father," Adrian whispered, every word carved from ice, "that if he tries to interfere with my family, I will release the offshore banking records of his entire election campaign to the FBI. He will be wearing an orange jumpsuit before the week is out. Now, get out of my sight before I lose my patience."
Julianne stared at him in utter shock, her face pale, before letting out a choked sob, turning on her heel, and running back up the stairs.
I stood in the center of the cold marble foyer, holding my sleeping daughter, watching the dramatic execution of his engagement. I should have felt relieved, but instead, a terrible sense of dread washed over me.
Adrian turned back to me, his gray eyes softened as he walked toward us. "She's gone. No one will ever disrespect you or our children again, Maya."
"You just destroyed your legal future for us," I whispered, searching his face. "Why, Adrian? You sacrificed four years to build that political alliance."
Adrian came close, reaching out to gently touch my cheek. His fingers were warm against my cold skin.
"I built that future because I thought I had nothing left to lose," he said softly, his thumb tracing my jawline. "I thought I lost the only woman I ever loved. But tonight, I realized that without you and our children, power is just a hollow shell. I don't care about the senator. I don't care about high society. I care about keeping you alive. And winning back your heart."
May you like
"Adrian..." I began, my voice breathy and confused.
"Don't answer me now," he murmured, his gaze falling to my lips before rising back to my eyes. "You're safe now, Maya. The kids are safe. That's all that matters tonight."
