Chapter 4 - The Shadows Cleared

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Moretti estate became the nerve center of a silent, systematic purge. With Julian in custody, Lorenzo used his former lieutenant's records to expose a massive web of corruption spanning the Chicago port authority, corrupt police captains, and rival syndicate bosses who had financed Isabella’s assassination.

Lorenzo didn't resort to chaotic violence. Instead, he deployed his legal teams, federal contacts, and undeniable evidence of Julian's treason to dismantle his enemies piece by piece. The burner phones, financial transactions, and recovered forensics from the crash site were delivered directly to a federal prosecutor who owed Lorenzo his life.

By Friday afternoon, the news broke across local television stations: a massive federal sweep had arrested twelve high-ranking syndicate figures and corrupt city officials in connection with a multi-year conspiracy.

Lorenzo stood in his study, watching the television report on mute. The heavy dark cloud that had hung over his heart for three years seemed to lift, replaced by a deep, quiet quietude. Isabella had finally been granted justice.

A soft knock sounded at the study door.

Sophia stepped inside, wearing her street clothes, carrying a small travel bag. Emma walked beside her, holding her pink hairbrush in one hand and her stuffed rabbit in the other.

Lorenzo turned around, his hands resting in his pockets. "Miss Carter."

"I came to say goodbye, Mr. Moretti," Sophia said softly. "The house is secure now. You don't need us here anymore, and... I think it's better if Emma and I find our own place."

Lorenzo looked at the little girl, who was staring up at the grand paintings on the wall with wide, curious eyes.

"Where will you go?" Lorenzo asked.

"I found a small apartment near the river," Sophia said, offering a timid smile. "I saved enough from my wages here to pay the first few months' rent. I'm going to apply at the local bakery."

Lorenzo walked around his desk, stopping a few feet from them. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a clean, sealed envelope, laying it on the mahogany surface.

"This estate has twenty-four bedrooms, a private security detail, and a park out back," Lorenzo said smoothly. "The bakery down the street pays ten dollars an hour. That is not sufficient for someone who saved my life."

Sophia blinked. "Mr. Moretti, I didn't do it for a reward—"

"I am not offering a reward," Lorenzo interrupted gently. "I am offering a contract. The head of my domestic operations retired last month. I need someone trustworthy to manage the estate, the staff, and the charity foundation I am establishing in Isabella’s name."

Sophia stared at him in disbelief. "You want me to run the estate?"

"The position comes with a permanent residence in the west wing, full educational funding for Emma, and a salary that ensures you never have to work in a hotel laundry again," Lorenzo said.

Emma tugged on Sophia’s sleeve, then looked up at Lorenzo. "Can I visit the big desk?"

A rare, faint smile touched the corner of Lorenzo Moretti’s lips—the first genuine smile anyone in that house had seen in three long years.

"Only if you bring your hairbrush," Lorenzo replied.
