Chapter 1 - The Scratched Locket

The winter sun barely cut through the high arching windows of the Moretti estate, casting long, cold shadows across the mahogany floorboards. Sophia Carter walked quickly through the service corridor, holding a tray of polished silverware, her heart still pounding from the day before. Every creak of the old estate felt like a warning. Lorenzo Moretti was not a man who granted second chances, yet he had spared her job.

While Emma was asleep under the watch of one of the older kitchen staff, Sophia set to work cleaning the second-floor gallery. It was an area rarely visited by the head of the house, lined with antique cabinets, oil paintings of bygone Morettis, and glass display cases filled with heirloom silver.

As she dusted the baseboards near a towering mahogany cabinet, her rag caught on a loose piece of velvet inside a slightly ajar lower drawer. Sophia pulled the drawer open to smooth the fabric back down, but as she did, a heavy metal object slid into view.

It was a antique silver locket, tarnished at the edges, its chain snapped.

Sophia’s hand paused. She knew better than to handle the family's personal effects, but the clasp was jammed open, revealing a tiny, faded photograph inside.

The woman in the picture was breathtaking—dark hair, bright laughing eyes, standing on what appeared to be the pier along Lake Michigan. Isabella Moretti.

Sophia felt a lump form in her throat. She recognized the face from the small memorial frame in the lower library, but what made her freeze was not the picture itself. It was the physical locket.

Her fingers trembled as she picked it up, tracing a distinct, deep jagged scratch running down the back casing.

She had seen this exact locket before.

Three years ago, before coming to work for Lorenzo, Sophia had cleaned rooms at a rundown motel on the outskirts of the city. One night, a man with a heavy accent and a deep scar across his throat had stayed in Room 114. He had dropped a collection of high-end jewelry onto the bedside table while arguing on the phone about a "job on the highway" that had "gone messy." Sophia had caught a brief glimpse of this very locket with its unique, scarred back. The man on the phone had referred to his employer as "the inner circle."

A sharp footstep sounded on the marble floor behind her.

"What are you holding?"

Sophia whirled around, dropping the locket onto the carpet. Lorenzo stood at the end of the gallery, his tailored dark coat making him look imposing against the pale light. His gaze dropped to the silver oval on the floor, and his eyes narrowed into something lethal.

"Mr. Moretti—I'm sorry," Sophia gasped, backing away until her spine hit the mahogany cabinet. "I was dusting the drawer. It was open. I didn't mean to look—"

Lorenzo stepped forward, his boots heavy against the floorboards. He knelt slowly, picking up the locket with careful, deliberate fingers. When he stood, the air in the gallery had turned sub-zero.

"You are holding my deceased wife's property," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Explain to me why your hands were on it."

"I recognized it," Sophia blurted out, her instincts taking over. "I swear on my daughter's life, I didn't steal it! I saw this locket three years ago. Before I ever stepped foot in this house!"

Lorenzo took two long strides, closing the distance between them until he towered over her. "Isabella was wearing this the night her car was forced off the road. The police inventory listed her personal effects as destroyed in the fire. Where could you possibly have seen it?"

"The Lakeview Motel," Sophia whispered, tears pricking her eyes as the memory rushed back. "October three years ago. A man with a long scar down his neck... he had it. He was talking to someone on the phone about taking care of 'the evidence' from the accident."

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened until the bone showed against his skin. For three years, the police report had called Isabella’s death an unpreventable collision caused by black ice. For three years, Lorenzo had suspected sabotage, but every lead had turned cold.

"Describe him," Lorenzo demanded, grabbing her shoulder—not with malice, but with a sudden, desperate urgency. "Every detail."

"He had a rose tattoo on his left hand," Sophia said, her voice shaking. "And he kept calling his boss 'The General.' He said 'The General' was close to you, that you'd never look for a snake in your own garden."

Lorenzo released her shoulder. He stood completely still in the quiet gallery, staring down at the scratched silver locket in his palm. The betrayal was not coming from an outside syndicate. It was coming from inside his own command structure.
