Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

By midnight, the storm outside had intensified, howling against the Lake Forest mansion. Inside Lorenzo’s private war room—a soundproof office beneath the main study—three men stood under the harsh overhead fluorescent lights: Marco, his chief of security; Victor, his long-time legal strategist; and Julian, his senior lieutenant who handled the estate’s financial holdings.
Lorenzo sat at the head of the heavy steel table, the scratched locket resting between his hands.
"The police records from that night were scrubbed," Lorenzo stated, his eyes scanning the faces of his three most trusted men. "The coroner’s report, the traffic camera feeds, even the tow truck logs. Someone with high-level clearance within my own organization paid to make Isabella’s crash look like an unfortunate tragedy."
Marco cleared his throat, adjusting his suit jacket. "Boss, with all due respect, you're relying on the word of a housemaid who has been here less than six months. She could be working for the rival families downtown, trying to plant seeds of doubt to turn us against each other."
"She didn't know what the locket was until she saw the picture inside," Lorenzo said coldly. "And she described a man with a throat scar and a rose tattoo on his left hand. Marco, does that description sound like a random motel guest to you?"
Julian’s face went pale for a fraction of a second, a reaction so subtle only Lorenzo caught it.
"That sounds like Viktor Vance's old crew," Julian chimed in quickly, leaning over the table. "Vance was running the docks back then. Maybe he ordered the hit to push you out of the transport business."
"Vance didn't have access to my wife's travel route that night," Lorenzo replied, his voice dropping an octave. "Only four people knew Isabella was leaving the clinic early. The three of you... and my late brother's estate executor."
A heavy silence descended upon the room. The air grew thick with unspoken accusations.
Upstairs, in the staff quarters, Sophia couldn't sleep. The rain rattled against her small window, and the weight of what she had told Lorenzo pressed down on her chest. She had placed herself and Emma directly in the center of a mob war.
A quiet knock at her door made her jump.
Sophia crept to the door, peering through the peephole. It wasn't Lorenzo, nor was it Marco. Standing in the dimly lit service hallway was Julian, holding a thick manila envelope.
Sophia unlatched the door an inch, keeping the safety chain engaged. "Mr. Julian?"
"Sophia," Julian said, offering a warm, reassuring smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mr. Moretti asked me to bring you this. It's a severance package, along with plane tickets to Seattle. He feels it's no longer safe for you or your little girl to remain on the premises."
Sophia hesitated. "Mr. Moretti told me to stay in the quarters until morning."
"Things have changed down in the study," Julian lowered his voice, stepping closer to the gap in the door. "He realizes you know too much about his wife's past. Lorenzo isn't a patient man, Sophia. He sent me to get you out quietly before things get messy. There's fifty thousand dollars in this envelope. Take Emma and leave through the kitchen gates now. My driver is waiting."
Sophia looked at the envelope, then thought of Lorenzo’s face when he had carefully brushed the knots out of Emma’s hair. He was a dangerous man, but he was direct. He wouldn't send a lieutenant to sneak her off the property in the middle of a storm.

"Let me pack Emma's shoes first," Sophia lied, stepping back. "Give me five minutes."
"You don't need to pack," Julian said, his smile instantly dropping. His hand slid into his coat pocket. "The car is running."
