Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

One year later.

The gardens of the Moretti estate in Long Island were completely transformed. The imposing security guards were still there, discreetly hidden in the tree lines, but the atmosphere was entirely different. Instead of fear and silence, the air was filled with the sound of a string quartet, the clinking of champagne glasses, and the joyous laughter of guests.

Rico Moretti stood at the end of an aisle strewn with white rose petals. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, looking more handsome and relaxed than he ever had in his life.

Over the past twelve months, Rico had kept his promise. After dismantling the Falcone family, he had systematically restructured the Moretti syndicate, moving their operations entirely into legitimate businesses—real estate, shipping logistics, and construction. It hadn't been easy, and there had been blood along the way, but Rico had washed his hands of the underworld. He was no longer a mob boss. He was simply a very wealthy, very powerful businessman.

The music swelled, shifting into the bridal chorus.

Rico’s breath caught in his throat as the doors of the mansion opened.

Clara emerged, looking like a vision. Her wedding dress was a masterpiece of delicate lace and silk that flowed around her like water. Her hair was swept up, intertwined with small white pearls. But it wasn't the dress that made Rico's heart pound; it was the radiant, unobstructed joy on her face.

Walking beside her, holding her hand, was four-year-old Leo. The boy was dressed in a miniature tuxedo that matched his father's. He was smiling broadly, a healthy, happy, vibrant child who had left the shadows of trauma far behind him.

As Clara and Leo reached the altar, Leo let go of Clara’s hand and ran to Rico. Rico picked him up with one arm, kissing his cheek before setting him down between them.

Rico took Clara’s hands in his. His hands, which had dealt so much death and destruction in the past, were gentle and trembling slightly as they held hers.

"You told me once that you didn't work for criminals," Rico said softly, his vows meant only for her ears, despite the hundreds of guests watching. "So, I stopped being one. I tore down my entire world just so I could be worthy of standing in yours. You are my light, Clara. You are the mother of my son. And you are the only reason I am alive today."

Tears streamed down Clara’s face, but she was smiling so hard her cheeks ached. "You were a terrifying man in a fancy suit," she whispered back, her voice thick with emotion. "But underneath all that armor, I found the most loving, fiercely protective heart. You didn't just save me from a broken life, Rico. You gave me a family. You gave me a reason to breathe again."

The priest smiled warmly at the couple. "Do you, Ricardo Moretti, take Clara Vance to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"I do," Rico said, his eyes never leaving hers. "With my life."

"And do you, Clara Vance, take Ricardo Moretti to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do," Clara said, squeezing his hands.

"Then by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Rico pulled Clara in, wrapping his arms around her waist, and kissed her. It wasn't a desperate, fearful kiss like the one on the night of the ambush. It was deep, passionate, and full of the promise of a lifetime of peace.

The crowd erupted into applause.

As they broke the kiss, Leo tugged on Clara’s dress. She knelt down to his eye level.

"Are you officially my mom now?" Leo asked, his big brown eyes wide with curiosity.

Clara’s heart swelled until she thought it might burst. She cupped his little face. "Yes, baby. I'm officially your mom. Forever and ever."

Leo grinned and threw his arms around her neck. Rico knelt down beside them, wrapping his large arms around both his wife and his son, burying his face in Clara’s neck.

The sunset painted the sky in brilliant hues of orange and gold, casting a warm, divine glow over the Moretti family. The darkness of their past had been profound, but the light they had found in each other was blinding.

They had survived the fire, and from the ashes, they had built a paradise.
