Chapter 5 - Blood and Vengeance

The flight back to the city was a blur of medical checks and heavy silence. Leo had been retrieved from the panic room, unharmed but shaken. He clung to Clara for the entire helicopter ride, refusing to let even Rico hold him. Clara held the boy tight, her own body bruised and battered, her lip swollen and stitched.
When they arrived at the heavily fortified penthouse in Manhattan, Rico ordered his top lieutenants into the war room. Clara took Leo to bathe and sleep.
It was past midnight when Clara finally emerged from Leo’s room. The penthouse was deathly quiet. She found Rico standing on the balcony, looking out over the glittering skyline of New York. He had stripped off his suit jacket and tie; his white shirt was stained with soot and dried blood.
He was smoking a cigar, his jaw tight, his eyes fixed on the horizon with a cold, murderous intent.
"He's asleep," Clara said softly, stepping onto the balcony. The cold wind bit through her thin sweater, making her shiver.
Rico immediately extinguished the cigar and took off his shoulder holster, tossing it onto a chair. He walked to her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her flush against his chest, transferring his body heat to her.
"I failed you today," Rico murmured, resting his chin on the top of her head. "I swore I would protect you, and they laid hands on you."
"I'm fine, Rico," Clara said, wrapping her arms around his waist. "We're safe."
"You are not fine. And we are not safe," Rico said, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with lethal promise. "Carmine Falcone ordered the hit on Elena. I have suspected it for six months, but I couldn't prove it without starting a war that would endanger Leo. But today... today he sent men to kill the woman I love. The war is here."
Clara’s heart stopped. She pulled back slightly to look up at his face. "The woman you...?"
Rico cupped her face, his thumbs gently avoiding the bruise on her cheek. "I love you, Clara. I loved Elena, and I thought my heart died in that car with her. But you brought it back to life. You saved my son. You saved me. And I will not let anyone take you from me."
Tears pricked Clara's eyes. "Rico, I love you too. But I'm terrified. This world... the guns, the violence. I don't want Leo to grow up in this. I don't want you to die in this."
Rico’s eyes softened, a profound resolution settling over his features. "He won't. And I won't. I'm ending it tonight."
"Ending it? How?"
"By cutting off the head of the snake," Rico said coldly. "Falcone thinks I'm weak. He thinks I'm hiding. I'm going to walk right through his front door."
"No!" Clara gasped, gripping his shirt. "It's a suicide mission! You can't!"
"I have to, Clara. For us to have a future, Falcone has to die." He kissed her fiercely, desperately. "Lock the doors. Dante will guard you and Leo. I will be back by dawn. I promise you, Clara. I am coming back to you."
He pulled away, grabbed his gun, and walked out the door.
The next six hours were the longest of Clara’s life. She paced the floor, her mind conjuring horrific images of Rico bleeding out in a gutter. Dante sat by the door, an assault rifle across his lap, monitoring a police scanner.
Around 4:00 AM, the scanner erupted with chatter. Multiple explosions in Brooklyn. A massive shootout at the Falcone compound. Fire trucks and ambulances dispatched.
Clara fell to her knees, sobbing quietly into her hands.
Dawn began to break, painting the New York sky in hues of pink and gold. The penthouse door clicked open.
Dante jumped up, weapon raised, but lowered it instantly.
Rico stood in the doorway. He was battered, bleeding from a cut above his eye, and his left arm hung limply at his side, wrapped in a makeshift, blood-soaked bandage. He looked exhausted, half-dead, but his eyes were clear and bright.
He dropped his gun on the table. It made a heavy, definitive thud.
"It's done," Rico rasped, looking directly at Clara. "Falcone is dead. His syndicate is broken. It's over."
Clara ran to him, throwing her arms around his uninjured side, weeping openly against his chest. Rico buried his face in her neck, his strong arms wrapping around her, holding her as if she were the only real thing left in the world.
"I came back to you," he whispered.
May you like
"You came back," she cried, kissing his jaw, his cheek, his lips.
As the morning sun flooded the penthouse, they stood together, bruised and bleeding, but finally, truly free.
