Chapter 4 - The Ambush

The safe house was a fortified cabin nestled deep in the Adirondacks, surrounded by miles of dense forest. It was heavily guarded by Rico’s best men, but the isolation only amplified Clara’s anxiety. Three days had passed since they fled the estate. Three days of terrifying silence from Rico.
Clara tried to keep things normal for Leo. They baked cookies, read books, and played in the heavily fenced backyard. But every snap of a twig made her jump.
On the afternoon of the fourth day, the nightmare became reality.
Clara was in the kitchen, washing dishes, while Leo played with his toy cars on the rug. Outside, the sky was overcast, heavy with the promise of rain.
Suddenly, the deafening crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the valley.
The glass window of the kitchen shattered, raining shards everywhere. Clara screamed, instinctively diving to the floor. Shouts erupted from outside. The staccato burst of automatic gunfire tore through the quiet afternoon.
"Clara!" Leo screamed, terrified by the noise.
"Leo! Get down!" Clara scrambled across the floor on her hands and knees, ignoring the glass biting into her palms. She reached the boy, grabbing him and pulling him fiercely against her chest.
"They breached the perimeter!" one of the bodyguards yelled from the front room, firing his weapon out the window. "There's too many of them!"
Clara’s mind raced. Rico had told her the protocol. If the house is breached, take Leo to the panic room in the basement. Do not come out until I open the door.
"Come on, baby, we have to hide," Clara grabbed Leo's hand and crawled toward the hallway. The house was shaking with the force of the crossfire. Bullets chewed through the drywall, sending plumes of plaster dust into the air.
As they reached the basement door, the front door of the cabin was kicked open.
Three men in tactical gear stormed in. One of Rico's guards went down in a spray of blood. The attackers swept the room, their guns raised.
"Find the girl and the kid! Falcone wants them alive, but if they resist, cripple them!" one of the men barked.
Clara shoved Leo down the basement stairs. "Run, Leo! Go to the heavy door! Go!"
She turned to follow him, but a heavy hand grabbed her hair, yanking her backward with brutal force. Clara cried out in pain as she was thrown violently against the wall. Her vision blurred, but she saw the barrel of a gun pointed squarely at her face.
"Well, well. You're a pretty little bird to cause so much trouble," the Falcone hitman sneered. "Where's the brat?"
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but as she looked at the man, a fierce, primal protective instinct took over. This was the same world that had killed Elena. She would die before she let them take Leo.
"Go to hell," Clara spat. She kicked out, her heel connecting sharply with the man's knee.
He roared in pain, his gun discharging into the ceiling. He backhanded Clara across the face, sending her crashing to the floor. Her lip split open, coppery blood filling her mouth.
"You're going to pay for that, bitch," he growled, raising the gun again.
Suddenly, the deafening roar of a helicopter engine rattled the cabin. The hitman looked up in confusion.
The windows at the back of the cabin exploded inward as two flashbang grenades were tossed inside. The brilliant, blinding light and concussive sound dropped everyone to their knees.
Before the smoke could clear, a figure stepped through the ruined doorway. It was Rico. He was covered in dirt, blood splattered across his cheek, holding an assault rifle. He looked like the devil incarnate.
He didn't hesitate. He didn't speak. He fired.
The three hitmen dropped to the floor, dead before they even registered they had been shot.
The cabin fell silent, save for the ringing in Clara’s ears. Rico dropped the rifle and rushed to her side, sliding to his knees. His hands were shaking as he touched her bruised face.
"Clara. Clara, look at me," Rico’s voice was frantic, desperate. "Are you hit? Where is Leo?"
Clara blinked through the pain, focusing on his terrified eyes. She raised a trembling hand to his cheek. "He's... he's in the basement. He's safe."
May you like
Rico let out a choked sound, pulling her into a desperate, crushing embrace. He buried his face in her hair, breathing in her scent like it was oxygen. "I thought I lost you. God, I thought I lost you."
In his arms, amidst the blood and the ruins of the cabin, Clara realized the terrifying truth. She was in love with a mafia boss. And there was no going back.
