Chapter 5 - Unspoken Truths

The sun broke through the storm clouds the following morning, casting golden rays across the estate’s manicured lawns.

In the grand master suite, Elena sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, holding Mia in her lap. The little girl had fallen fast asleep, clutching her brown teddy bear, exhausted from the long, terrifying night.

The heavy double doors opened, and Adrian stepped inside.

He looked tired—his jacket was gone, his tie loosened, his dark hair damp—but the cold, terrifying shadow that usually hovered over him seemed to have vanished.

Elena stood up quickly, holding Mia against her chest. "Mr. Moretti... is it over?"

"It’s over, Elena," Adrian said softly, closing the door behind him. He walked over to the lounge area and sat down in an armchair opposite her. "Salvatore is in federal custody. The Falcones have surrendered their territory. The estate is safe."

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Thank God... thank God."

Adrian looked at her for a long moment. "Why didn't you tell me who you were, Elena?"

Elena went completely still. She looked at him, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of fear and sorrow. "What do you mean?"

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, yellowed photograph he had found hidden in the back of Catherine’s diary. It showed a younger Catherine Moretti smiling beside a young woman who looked almost identical to Elena.

"Your mother was Clara Vance," Adrian said quietly. "Her family owned this mansion before my father bought it. Clara was my mother’s closest friend. That’s why you knew about the hidden boxes in the basement. You didn't come here by accident, did you?"

Elena lowered her head, wiping her tears. "My family lost everything when my grandfather died," she whispered. "My mother died three years ago. Before she passed, she told me that if I ever needed a safe place to hide from my abusive ex-husband, I should come here... she said Catherine Moretti was the kindest woman she ever knew, and that her son would protect me if I ever got desperate."

"When I got here," Elena continued, looking up at Adrian with raw honesty, "I found out Catherine was dead. I saw how cold and dangerous you were. I was terrified. So I took a job as a maid, hid my real name, and planned to save enough money to leave New York forever."

Adrian listened to every word, his heart aching for the woman who had carried such a heavy burden alone in his own house.

"You don't have to hide anymore, Elena," Adrian said, his voice deep and filled with unyielding conviction. "You are Clara Vance’s daughter. This house belonged to your family once. You are not a maid here."

"I don't have any money, Mr. Moretti," Elena said softly. "I can't afford—"

"I don't want your money," Adrian interrupted gently. "My mother tried to leave this life to give me a real home. She failed because she was alone. I won't fail you. You and Mia stay here. Not as staff. As my family."

Elena stared at him, her lips parted in disbelief. "Family?"

"Family," Adrian repeated.

Mia stirred in Elena’s arms, blinking her big brown eyes open. She looked from her mother to Adrian, then let out a small yawn. She wiggled out of Elena’s lap, walked across the plush rug in her mismatched socks, and climbed right onto Adrian’s lap.

Elena gasped. "Mia, no—"

"It’s alright," Adrian said quickly, his arms instinctively wrapping around the tiny girl to make sure she didn't fall.

Mia rested her head against Adrian’s chest, clutching her brown bear. "Are you still sad about the clock?" she asked sleepily.

May you like

Adrian looked down at her, a genuine, warm smile spreading across his face—a smile his men hadn't seen in twenty years.

"No, Mia," Adrian whispered, kissing the top of her dark curls. "The clock was just an old thing. I have something much better now."
