Chapter 2 - The Echo in the Walls

By midafternoon, the atmosphere within the Moretti mansion had grown suffocatingly tense. Adrian sat in the security control room with Dominic Russo, his most trusted enforcer and tactical chief.

"Did you find out where that paper came from?" Adrian asked, his arms crossed over his chest as he stared at the security screens monitoring the estate perimeter.

Dominic leaned against the console, tapping a tablet. "I checked the archive room in the basement. It’s an old mansion, boss. Before your father bought this place twenty years ago, it belonged to the Vance family—the old shipping magnates. There are dozens of boxes of abandoned financial records down there."

"Salvatore looked at that paper as if it were a death warrant," Adrian said quietly. "He didn't just recognize the paper, Dominic. He recognized the handwriting."

"Whose handwriting?"

"I don't know," Adrian admitted grimly. "But I intend to find out."

At that moment, on Screen 4, which showed the rear courtyard garden, a tiny figure appeared. Mia was skipping along the stone path, wearing her yellow raincoat over her dress, dragging her stuffed bear through the damp fallen leaves. Elena was sitting on a nearby bench, folding laundry, but her eyes were darting nervously around the courtyard.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the garden path.

Salvatore stepped out from beneath the covered terrace. He approached Elena slowly.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed on the monitor. "Turn up the audio on Sector Four."

Dominic clicked a button, and the directional microphone feed crackled to life over the speakers.

"—don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Rizzi," Elena’s panicked voice echoed into the security room. She stood up, pulling Mia behind her skirt.

"Don't play innocent with me, girl," Salvatore’s voice came through, cold and venomous. "Where did you get that notebook? The one with the green leather cover in the basement?"

"I found it in a broken crate near the boiler!" Elena insisted, her voice trembling. "Mia liked the blank pages! I didn't read it! I swear I didn't read it!"

"If you lie to me," Salvatore whispered, stepping so close to Elena that she was forced against the brick wall, "I will make sure you and that bastard child vanish before the sun goes down. Do you understand me? You tell no one about what you saw in that box. Not Adrian. Not Mrs. Whitfield. Nobody."

On the screen, Mia suddenly stepped out from behind her mother’s skirt. She planted her tiny boots firm on the stone path, held up her brown teddy bear like a shield, and glared up at the six-foot-two mobster.

"Stop shouting at my mommy!" Mia’s little voice squeaked loudly over the microphone. "You're a mean man!"

Salvatore looked down at the child, his face twisting into a scowl of pure disgust. He raised his hand—not to strike, but in an aggressive gesture to push the child aside.

In the security room, Adrian didn't say a word. He bolted out the door.

Dominic followed close behind, his hand already resting on the butt of his Glock.

They reached the courtyard in less than forty seconds. By the time the heavy glass doors burst open, Salvatore was still looming over Elena, threatening her under his breath.

"Salvatore!" Adrian’s voice tore through the autumn air like an artillery shell.

Salvatore froze, slowly turning around. His expression smoothed over instantly, but the sweat glistening on his forehead betrayed him. "Adrian. I was just reminding Elena about estate safety. The child was running too close to the fountain."

Adrian walked down the stone steps, his movements slow, deliberate, and terrifyingly calm. He stopped two feet from Salvatore. He didn't look at his right-hand man. Instead, he looked at Mia, who was still clutching her rabbit, her lower lip trembling slightly now that the adrenaline was fading.

Adrian dropped to one knee in front of the little girl.

"Mia," he said softly. "Did he scare you?"

Mia nodded, pressing herself into her mother’s leg. "He shouted at Mommy. He said he was going to make us vanish. Like magic, but bad magic."

The silence in the courtyard was absolute. Even the birds in the ancient oaks seemed to stop singing.

Adrian stood up slowly. He turned to face Salvatore. The temperature in Adrian’s eyes was absolute zero.

"Fifteen years," Adrian said softly. "You stood beside me when the Maroni family ambushed us in Queens. You took a bullet for my father in '08. I trusted you with my life, Salvatore."

"Adrian, listen to me—" Salvatore started, taking a step back.

"Dominic," Adrian commanded without looking away from Salvatore. "Take Elena and Mia to my private suite upstairs. Lock the doors. Place four men outside."

"No!" Elena cried out, clutching Mia tight. "Mr. Moretti, please! We'll leave! We'll pack our things and leave New York tonight!"

Adrian turned his head slightly toward her. His dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second. "You're not leaving, Elena. Because as long as whatever is in that basement exists, you and Mia will never be safe out there. Stay in my room. You have my word—no one touches you."

Dominic gently guided the sobbing Elena and the wide-eyed Mia back toward the main house.

Once the doors closed behind them, Adrian looked back at Salvatore.

"Now," Adrian said, drawing a heavy silver key from his vest pocket—the master key to the basement archives. "Show me what you buried fifteen years ago."
