Chapter 5 - The Basement Box and the Viper's Nest

It took less than forty minutes for Alessandro’s men to strip our old tenement basement bare and deliver the contents to Villa Moretti’s private library.

I sat at the edge of a massive mahogany reading table while Alessandro stood beneath the flickering desk lamp, using a pair of heavy wire cutters to snap the rusted padlock off the dented metal toolbox my husband had left behind.

Clack.

The latch sprang open.

Inside sat a layer of greasy wrenches, a couple of rusted screwdrivers, and a stack of folded blueprints. But beneath the tools lay a false bottom made of thin aluminum sheeting. Alessandro lifted it away with the tip of a blade.

Hidden beneath the false bottom was a sleek, military-grade encrypted laptop, a heavy stack of handwritten financial ledgers bearing the Moretti family crest, and a thick envelope stuffed with bearer bonds worth millions of euros.

"There it is," Alessandro murmured, shining a small penlight across the pages of the topmost ledger. "The entire missing portfolio. Every euro siphoned from the northern docks account over a six-year period."

He flipped the pages until he reached the final entry, dated just two weeks before Marco’s reported death. Scribbled in the margin was a note written in Marco’s familiar, sharp handwriting:

“If Moretti ever tracks this down, the fallback option is active. Use the Romano alliance to secure safe passage out of the country through the eastern ports. Vivian holds the secondary cipher.”

I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand. "Vivian? My husband was working with Vivian Romano?"

"Not just Vivian," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the doorway of the library.

We both spun around.

Standing in the open doorway was Donato Vance. He was no longer cowering in handcuffs in the basement. Somehow, he had broken free, and now he held a suppressed automatic pistol aimed squarely at Alessandro’s chest. Behind him stood two rogue syndicate enforcers who had been part of his personal detail.

"Donato," Alessandro said calmly, not even flinching as the black barrel of the gun pointed straight at his heart. "I should have known you were the rot at the core of the apple."

Donato laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "It's always the quiet ones, isn't it, Alessandro? You sit on your throne, acting like a god, while the rest of us do the actual bleeding to keep your empire afloat. Marco and I built this network together. When he faked his death, he left the keys with me. And tonight, thanks to your little emotional breakdown over a maid and her brat, I finally found where the ledgers were hidden."

Donato’s eyes flicked over to me, and a cruel, vicious smile twisted his lips. "And as for the little girl... well, she served her purpose. Bringing that bear to the gala was a stupid mistake on Marco's part, leaving it in the apartment where the child would find it. But accidents happen in big houses, don't they?"

He raised the pistol slightly, shifting his aim from Alessandro to me.

My heart stopped. I froze in my seat, paralyzed by the cold circle of black metal staring me down.

"Put the gun down, Donato," Alessandro warned, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it made the hairs on my arms stand up. "If you pull that trigger, you won't make it three steps out of this room."

"I don't need three steps, Moretti," Donato sneered, tightening his finger on the trigger. "I just need—"

BANG.

The gunshot roared through the library, but it didn't come from Donato's gun.

Before Donato could finish his sentence, the heavy oak door behind him burst inward with a splintering crash. A massive flash of light and smoke filled the doorway as three federal agents—led by a senior captain working directly under the state’s anti-mafia directorate—opened fire with synchronized precision.

Donato’s enforcers dropped instantly, hit cleanly in the shoulders and legs. Donato himself screamed as a round shattered his right wrist, sending his pistol clattering across the marble floor.

He spun around, clutching his bleeding hand, only to find the room swarming with heavily armed federal police and Moretti’s loyal elite guards who had flanked the estate from the outside.

"It's over, Donato," Alessandro said smoothly, stepping out from behind the desk as he holstered his own concealed weapon. "You really didn't think I'd leave the front gate unsecured after I knew there was a traitor in the house, did you?"

May you like

Donato collapsed to his knees, pale and shaking, as the heavy steel handcuffs were slapped onto his wrists. He was dragged out of the room, cursing and thrashing, his criminal empire collapsing around him in a matter of seconds.

The library fell silent once more, save for the crack of the desk lamp and the distant wail of police sirens approaching the perimeter gates.
