Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Stitched Mark

The air in Villa Moretti felt as though it had been sucked out of the room entirely. Twelve powerful crime lords shifted uneasily in their seats, sensing the sudden tectonic shift in the atmosphere, while their bodyguards instinctively rested their hands near their concealed holsters.

Alessandro remained kneeling on the Persian rug, his large, calloused fingers tracing the tiny black symbol on Clara’s worn teddy bear over and over again. It wasn't just a random manufacturer's tag. It was a stylized, interlocking double-serpent emblem embroidered with black silk thread—a signature mark so exclusive, so deeply hidden, that only three people in the entire criminal syndicate were ever supposed to know it existed.

"Answer me," Alessandro whispered, his gaze shifting back to me. The raw intensity in his gray eyes pinned me to the spot. "Where did she get this toy? Who gave it to her?"

My throat felt dry as paper. I instinctively stepped half an inch closer to Clara, wrapping my arm protectively around her small shoulders.

"I... I bought it for her at a small charity flea market in the old district three years ago," I stammered, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "Before I started working here. It was sitting in a bin of discarded donations. She fell in love with it and wouldn't let go, so I paid fifty cents for it. Why? Is something wrong?"

Alessandro didn't answer immediately. He slowly stood up, towering over me, his face an impenetrable mask of dark calculation.

"Fifty cents," he murmured, his voice laced with bitter irony. He looked back toward the open ballroom doors, his eyes locking onto a specific man sitting near the back table—Donato Vance, the head of the maritime shipping syndicate and one of Alessandro's most trusted regional advisors.

Donato’s face went instantly pale. He set his glass down so hard wine sloshed over the rim.

"Moretti—Boss," Donato choked out, half-rising from his chair. "Is something amiss?"

"That symbol," Alessandro said, pointing a finger directly at Clara’s teddy bear. "It’s the internal property mark of the Moretti Logistics Vanguard division. Specifically, it was used on secure contraband transport crates operated out of the northern docks six years ago. The only people authorized to use that thread stamp were my personal quartermasters... and the head of internal security."

A collective murmur rippled through the twelve families. Whispers broke out like a swarm of angry hornets.

"That's impossible!" Donato protested, his voice cracking slightly as he stepped forward into the corridor. "A transport mark from six years ago? It could be a coincidence! Thousands of burlap sacks and shipping crates passed through the northern docks. A stray patch could end up anywhere!"

"Nothing from the Vanguard division ends up in a charity bin by accident, Donato," Alessandro replied, his tone chillingly smooth. "Every single item logged under that serial number was accounted for—except for one specific shipment that vanished the night my brother's estate was raided."

My head spun. I looked down at Clara, who was innocently nuzzling the bear's head, completely unaware that her favorite toy had just triggered a ticking time bomb at the heart of the Italian mafia.

"Mr. Moretti," I interjected, my voice trembling with fear and confusion. "Please. We have nothing to do with your syndicate business. We're just trying to survive. If the toy causes trouble, you can take it. Just... please don't hurt us."

Alessandro looked down at me, and for a fleeting moment, the terrifying mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man drowning in a sea of ancient ghosts. He didn't look at me like a maid who had spilled wine; he looked at me as if he were trying to read a forgotten chapter of his own life.

"You said you bought it three years ago," Alessandro said, his voice dropping lower. "Tell me everything about the day you found it. Every detail. If you leave out even a single word, I swear to God, you won't like what happens next."

"I... I was living in a damp basement apartment near the docks," I stammered, tears prickling my eyelids from the sheer stress. "Clara was just a newborn. I had lost my husband in a construction accident, and I had no money for diapers, let alone toys. I was walking past the charity bins behind St. Jude’s parish when I saw the bear sticking out of a black trash bag. It was clean, almost brand new, wrapped inside a heavy wool blanket. I took it out because Clara needed something soft to hold. There was a small note tucked inside the blanket, but the rain had ruined the ink. All I could read was a single word: 'Survive.'"

Silence descended upon the corridor once more, heavier and more suffocating than before.

Donato Vance wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his eyes darting nervously toward the exit. "Boss, this is madness. We're entertaining the ramblings of a desperate cleaning woman over a child's stuffed animal. The gala—your engagement announcement—we should return to the guests."

Alessandro turned slowly toward Donato. A terrifying, mirless smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Engagement?" Alessandro murmured softly, taking a step toward Donato. "Ah, yes. Vivian was so eager to announce it tonight, wasn't she?" He glanced back at Vivian, who was standing frozen against the wall, looking as though she might faint.

"Donato," Alessandro continued, his voice rising just enough to echo across the entire ballroom. "Do you know what else happened six years ago at the northern docks? A fire. A targeted warehouse fire that destroyed every digital record of our import logs. And buried beneath those ashes was the proof of who leaked our secure shipping routes to the rival factions."

Donato staggered backward, colliding with a marble pillar. "You... you can't possibly believe—"

"I don't believe, Donato. I investigate," Alessandro interrupted, snapping his fingers.

Before Donato could draw the hidden weapon tucked inside his tuxedo jacket, two massive armed guards materialized behind him, kicking his legs out from under him and slamming him face-first onto the Persian rug. The room erupted into chaos as several allied capos stood up, shouting objections, but a single raised hand from Alessandro instantly silenced the entire room.

"Lock down the villa," Alessandro ordered coldly. "Nobody leaves. Not a single guest, not a single guard, until we tear this house apart and find out how a child in a slums apartment ended up holding a piece of my family's lost history."
